  1. Lift and Shift with Confidence to Oracle Database Cloud @ Anthem Inc. Naushad Bhamani Sr. Database Admin Advisor, DMA Tel: (404) 309-8459 Email: naushad.bhamani@anthem.com

  2. Introduction to Anthem Anthem is one of the nation s leading health benefits companies 2

  3. Oracle Infrastructure at Anthem@ Until early 2014 Anthem was a major AIX shop with over 800+ databases hosting mix application (OLTP, DSS, Data warehouse). In 2014 we purchased our first Exadata X4s that consisted of two full and two half racks (6 clusters with total 20 compute nodes). In 2018 75% of our environment has moved to Exadata hardware which has grown to 28 Clusters hosting 800+ databases The demand for Exadata was growing fast and we needed something to monitor the capacity, control the usage and at the same time maximize the return on investments. Monitoring tools we used was OEM and home grown scripts gathering data and storing it in a database. 3

  4. Concerns with the Fast Pace Growth Our goal was to address the need for a high-level, real-time capacity picture. What is the CPU used each node V/s cluster What is the memory/huge pages used, each node V/s cluster What is the IO/flash cache usage What is our storage growth Additional items to address If there are spikes in any of the above than what is the cause? Are we hitting the ceiling? Will there be a problem if one node crashes? Can we safely relocate databases to other cluster? OEM would not give us what we wanted to see! We decided to gather data in a database to create our own reports Excel was too slow in plotting charts Even Tableau was slow and the data was a day old 4

  13. Benefits Best Practices Analyze resource usage across application tiers Maximize return on your expensive investment Create and Customize your own dashboards Growth pattern allows to plan in advance for purchasing additional hardware Helps to isolate problems of a single component It helps focus on tuning work on biggest potential payoffs. One stop shop even for monitoring and tuning Log Analytics Customize right resource, for e.g. CPU/Cluster/storage/infiniband etc. Create custom dash boards Monitor on weekly basis to the least 13
