Lightning is a powerful natural electrical discharge phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere. It involves the rapid release of electrical energy between charged areas in the clouds and the ground, resulting in a high-voltage strike followed by thunder. Learn about the causes, safety measures, and interesting facts related to lightning in this informative content.

  1. Lightning Reilly O'Callaghan, Olivia Colombo, Bora Jin, Lauren Schubak, Veni a Davignon

  2. What is lighting? Lighting is a fast electrical releasethat starts in the clouds and strikes the ground with avery high voltage strike Lighting is usually followed by thunder

  3. Negative charged particles go to the bottom of the cloud. When the two charged areas get big enough a spark between the clouds (lighting) is formed. This is like static electricitybut on a bigger scale. The opposite charges attract each other and result in a "shock" (lightning) How is it an example of static electricity?

  4. When outside If the weather calls for lightning postpone a trip or activity. Thunder means lightning Get as close to the ground as you can with as little body touching the ground possible Safety measures/ precautions When indoors Avoid water Avoid all electronic devices Corded phones Avoid concrete

  5. 1. The cloud becomes a thundercloud by the tops of the clouds turning into ice due to below freezing temperature 2. Small bits of ice bumpoff of each other as they move around building an electrical charge What is the Cause of Lightning? 3. Light positively charged particles are at the cloud 4. Heavy negatively charged particles are at the bottom of the cloud 5. The positive and negative particles grow very large and a big spark (lightning) occurs between the charges.

  6. A single bolt of lightning is around 50,000f or 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun. The irrational fear of lightning is known as keraunophobia. Lightning can havenegative and positive strikes. Fun Facts You have a 1 in 3,000 chance of being struck by lightning. Around 2,000 peopleper year are killed by lightning. One lighting bolt can give enough energyto a light bulb for it to stay on for over 3 months straight.
