Course Themes recap: What is the relationship between literature and the real world?
Utopian and dystopian thought: each contains elements of the other. Literature can remind us of who we are, can warn us, can inspire us, and can help us organize
What is the relationship between the past, the present, and the future? The dangers of purity or of a clean start : 1. loss of necessary cultural ecology 2. Whose culture gets to be considered neutral ?
Solarpunk grows out of Cyberpunk Literary analysis explores relationship between form and content The Hale centre is reclaimed for the Boston homeless community, just as the dystopian 1980s genre of cyberpunk is reclaimed by the Utopian Solarpunk Neuromancer, 1984 Blade Runner, 1982 (DADOES 1968)
The Boston Hearth Project Formal elements: heavy reliance on verbs, many short one syllable words, creates motion and sense of action First person limited point of view: we only hear inside Andie s I (15) perspective Setting: Building as a world of its own? Contained locations create vivid worldcraft: Kay s house (16), hotel room (17), Hale Centre & city of Boston (19)
The Boston Hearth Project Formal elements: heavy reliance on verbs, many short one syllable words, creates motion and sense of action Many staccato (T, K, P) sounds and single-syllable words: sleek glass pane (18) those had been stripped out (18) ten foot drop onto tile (20) I checked in on the guard cam (23) I know how high she can jump (17)
The Boston Hearth Project Formal elements: heavy reliance on verbs, many short one syllable words, creates motion and sense of action jump (17) slam got let (24), drop (19), tuck (19) burst (23) stuck (17) Even the nouns are often single syllable and active: leaps (19), drop (19) siege (24) Cyberpunk terminology and visuals: kit (17, 18) to refer to computer display / equipment
The Boston Hearth Project Response to Cyberpunk, but: Characters notisolated: large support network: Kay s colleagues who make and put up posters (19), social media team who make the siege a PR nightmare (24), larger and larger body of volunteers (24) Racialization is humanizing (rather than stylized or exoticized): Juniper s accent (21), long black hair (18) Disability: active & characters possess agency: chair seemed like a better decision (18) part of character (18) structural access through infrastructure and through interdependence & reliable community: friends ready to pick me up (23).
The Boston Hearth Project Heist genre from cyberpunk & older hardboiled detective fiction: countdowns and planned timing: took about seven and a half minutes (23), about eighteen minutes until the cops arrive (23) after this, it s a speed run (22) Heist genre with an ethical twist: the central characters do not benefit personally or financially, eg Kay hasn t been in the Hearth at all this year (25), Juniper is wanted (25) The characters deeply trust each other, unlike in heist stories that are every man for themselves where characters know they could betray each other any minute
The Boston Hearth Project Response to Cyberpunk, but: Hypermodern visual landscape reimagined as yellows and oranges painted by artists who rappelled down from the roof (24). Physically intervening in greys and metals of cyberpunk and corporate world Role of police, abolitionist impulse: weapons are not kept, they are destroyed (24) We disassembled their weapons, smashed important pieces with heavy objects, and rained down gun parts onto the tops of cop cars (24)
Breakout: 8 minutes Share your name Do you see The Boston Hearth Project as more Utopic, or more dystopic? In the story, the police are disarmed. How do you imagine the characters will handle conflict and harm in their community that forms inside the building? What would be the best way? Reminders: Raise hand icon to ask me to come help I may drop in to the breakout room, don t be surprised. Just there to help and listen You can exit the room if done early Countdown will appear when breakout is almost over
