  1. SCQF LEVEL 6: LITERATURE, COMMUNICATION & CULTURE

  2. Why are we introducing this? To 'fill a gap' that we have in our current course offering To develop essential skills that learners will need (particularly if they are planning to do Higher English in S6) To ensure that learners have the chance to demonstrate their skills without the pressure of external assessments To give learners the opportunity to engage with a challenging and engaging course

  3. Who is this course for? The entry requirement for this course is a pass at National 5 English This course would suit students who want to develop their core English skills further without the demand of externally assessed examinations This provides a pathway to Higher English in S6

  4. What are the benefits? The complete course is worth 36 SCQF credit points in total (for reference - Higher English is worth 24) There are no external assessments It gives learners the chance to develop their skills in reading, writing, talking and listening in preparation for Higher English (if appropriate) It gives class teachers a good indication of whether learners would cope with the demands of the Higher English course

  5. How will the course work? The course is made up of 4 units at Level 6: oCommunication oLiterature 1 oEnglish with a Scottish Context comprising analysis and evaluation creation and production Pupils can complete outcomes that will count for more than one course

  6. Course structure: Communication (level 6) COMMUNICATION Requirements Outcome OUTCOME 1 ANALYSE & EVALUATE COMPLEX WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Analyse and evaluate written non-fiction. OUTCOME 2 PRODUCE COMPLEX WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Write a complex non-fiction text. 650 words minimum. OUTCOME 3 ANALYSE & EVALUATE COMPLEX SPOKEN COMMUNICATION Analyse and evaluate spoken language. Create and deliver an individual presentation (5 mins & questions) or Participate in a group discussion (contribution to a discussion) OUTCOME 4 DELIVER & PARTICIPATE COMPLEX SPOKEN COMMUNICATION

  7. Course structure: Literature 1 LITERATURE Outcome Requirements Analyse and evaluate 2 literary texts in different genres . At least one response will be written i.e. a critical essay (650 words or 6 minutes minimum) OUTCOME 1 ANALYSE AND EVALUATE LITERARY TEXTS IN DIFFERENT GENRES OUTCOME 2 CRITICALLY RESPOND TO AN UNSEEN LITERARY TEXT. Analyse and evaluate an unseen literary text; this can be written or spoken. (This must be completed independently)

Course structure: English with a Scottish Context (level 6) ENGLISH WITH A SCOTTISH CONTEXT Outcome Requirements ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OUTCOME 1 Understand, analyse and evaluate detailed and complex written texts Understand, analyse and evaluate a written Scottish text OUTCOME 2 Understand, analyse and evaluate detailed and complex spoken language Understand, analyse and evaluate a spoken Scottish text CREATION AND PRODUCTION OUTCOME 1 Create and produce detailed and complex written texts Create a written text with/on a Scottish theme or in Scots OUTCOME 2 Participate actively in detailed and complex spoken activities Produce an individual talk or participate in a group discussion with/on a Scottish theme
