  1. Livestock and Fish new flagships Acho Okike, An Notenbaert, Kathy Colverson, Froukje Kruijssen, Isabelle Baltenweck, Steve Staal Livestock and Fish Theme Planning Week Naivasha, Kenya 24-28 March 2014

  2. Why re-structuring? Overlaps between e.g. VCD and targeting; un-clarity about who s doing what? Weak linkage between VCs and technology platforms Disconnected analysis of the multiple dimensions (economic, social and environmental sustainability / value chain performance) Need for more innovation systems research

  3. Restructuring the Livestock & Fish CRP DISCOVERY DELIVERY Technology Platforms Animal health Genetics Feed & forages Value Chain Transformation & Scaling Multidisciplinary value chain teams Innovation Targeting Partnerships Capacity development Communication Systems Analysis for Sustainability Social sciences Targeting Environment Management and program M&E, communications, governance

  4. Discovery & Delivery Discovery is the development of innovations that are new or applied in a different context Delivery is interpreted as enabling innovations for (value chain) transformation and scaling. ITERATIVE PROCESS * Innovations: technologies, business models, institutional arrangements,

  5. DISCOVERY FLAGSHIPS

  6. Four (4) Discovery Flagships (EXISTING) 3 Technology Flagships (Feeds & Forages, Genetics, Animal Health) - They create both upstream and more applied technologies. (SUGGESTED) Systems analysis for sustainability

  7. The 4th (SUGGESTED) Flagship - Systems analysis for sustainability Information and tools To assess and improve the economic, social and environmental performance of the VCs priority setting Multi-scale & multi-dimensional Interdisciplinary: value chain economics, policy, innovation, foresight, ex-ante impact modelling, trade-off analysis, gender, nutritional and food security, impact assessment

  8. Systems analysis for sustainability - suggested clusters of activities Cluster 1: Methods and tools for identifying and targeting scalable interventions for improved VC performance are developed and documented. Cluster 2: Interventions that are sustainable, scalable and improve the nature and level of women s and marginalized groups participation in livestock and fish value chains are identified, refined and targeted in the program s operational VCs and beyond.

  9. DELIVERY FLAGSHIP

  10. Enabling innovations for value chain transformation and scaling Alliances and innovation capacity To put research into use Translation of promising technology into sustainable and viable solutions Action research championed by VC coordinators Drawing lessons and providing real-time feed back to the discovery flagships Stakeholders to actively seek funding

  11. Enabling innovations for value chain transformation and scaling - Suggested clusters of activities Cluster 1: Increased capacity within CG centres, partner organisations and value chain actors to diagnose and overcome value chain constraints and assess trade-off across different dimensions such as gender, poverty, equity, and sustainability. Cluster 2: Best bet strategies, approaches and interventions piloted, validated and scaled up and out; also new technical and institutional solutions, with partners and other value chain actors . INNOVATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH!

  12. SUMMARY

  13. Systems analysis for sustainability Multi-scale & multi-dimensional systems analysis for priority setting Cluster 1: Methods and tools developed and documented. Cluster 2: Interventions are identified, refined and targeted in the program s operational VCs and beyond. Enabling innovations for value chain transformation and scaling Action research in the VCs Cluster 1: Increased capacity within CG centres, partner organisations and value chain actors Cluster 2: (INNOVATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH DRIVEN) Best bet strategies, approaches and interventions piloted, validated and scaled up and out

  14. CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish livestockfish.cgiar.org livestockfish.cgiar.org CGIAR is a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food secure future. The CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish aims to increase the productivity of small-scale livestock and fish systems in sustainable ways, making meat, milk and fish more available and affordable across the developing world.
