BAPTISM WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE 2 Peter 1:3-11 p. 1126
BAPTISM Through baptism become part of story of salvation o We die to ourselves raised with Christ o Walk in newness of Life (Rom 6:4)
1. WE ARE FORMED BY A STORY All people live in a story o My story born & raised in South Africa White English Christian South African Canadian husband & father What parts of our story influence us most?
1. WE ARE FORMED BY A STORY Jesus is the key marker of our identity o Through God s power & promises we live differently o Each day requires reaffirmation of that decision o Our actions day-by-day determine who we become
2. FORMATION REQUIRES INTENTIONALITY Peter: actions we must take to put on the divine nature o There is a specific way to walk in newness of life o They are approaches to life more than just things to do o We live life as if it is all sacred events and activities o The Bible makes all of life sacred, holy, part of worship o There is no part of life that s not part of our life in him (Ac 17:28) o This is a new way of living

REJECT FALSE ASSUMPTIONS & IDEAS Parts of our story affirm good, encourage us deeper into Christ Other part of our story lead us astray o Sometimes disappointments & struggles are catalysts for growth o Sometimes easy, fun things entice us away from Jesus We must reject false/worldly assumptions & ideas o Adding knowledge to faith moves us forward and deeper o It is experiential, relational knowing in our inner being

REJECT FALSE ASSUMPTIONS & IDEAS Biblical knowing touches us in our inner being o New understanding, by perseverance and obedience, transforms us o Key is knowing how to walk in the Spirit o Spiritual practices cultivate godliness o Transforms how we perceive ourselves and how we live o Soul-training opens us to the Spirit take us deeper into Christ o It requires change and intentionality
LIVING IT Christian story is the story of Jesus o This story forms our lives Early church took illiterate pagans and created a Christian culture Faithful remnant in each generation preserved, passed on Story o Involved people in the story o Telling the story over and over each year in the church calendar o Allows depth, height, breadth of salvation to seep into our souls
LIVING IT Peter: Repent and be baptized o You will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:28) o Convicts of sin, guides us in Jesus teaching, empowers us to live o We rely on the power and self-control the Spirit gives Richly provided with entrance into the eternal Kingdom!
