Lung abscess also called as pulmonary abscess, is a pus filled in the cavity of the lungs caused by an infection.
Lung abscess is defined as the condition in which there is an accumulation of fluid or pus in lung cavity.
Infection Trauma Fall Smoking Alcohol Aspiration of foreign body Pre existing lung disease
Cough producing purulent sputum (often dark brown) Foul smelling and tasting Hemoptysis Fever Cough Malaise Headache Weight loss Dyspnea
Due to etiological factors Microorganism enters in the lung cavity Infection to the lung Inflammatory response initiated Alveolar edema Increased production of sputum Consolidation of lung tissue
History collection Physical examination Chest X-ray CT-scan Bronchoscopy Sputum culture
Antibiotics given for prolonged period (2-4 months). Penicillin has historically been the drug of choice because of the frequent presence of anaerobic organism. Antimicrobial drugs Postural drainage Chest physiotherapy
Surgery is rarely indicated but occasionally may be necessary when reinfection of a cavity occurs. Lobectomy (removal of lobe from lung) Pneumonectomy (removal of lung).
