MAKING A DEAD CHURCH TO COME ALIVE

MEMORY VERSE: Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God (Revelation 3:2) TEXT: Revelation 3:1-6

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION CONTD. Peter and Mark both gave their lives to Jesus and became born again. Their lives changed immediately. The joy of salvation filled their hearts. They loved to read their Bibles, pray every time and talk to others about Jesus. They were always the first to get to church for Bible Study and other fellowships. They no longer lived in their old way of fighting, telling lies, cheating, following bad friends, and doing other bad things. They became new creature.

All the people around them noticed the changes in Peter s and Mark s lives. They also started preaching the gospel to their old sinful friends. It was a great change indeed! But during the long holiday, Peter and Mark travelled to their uncle s place in another town where they could not attend fellowship, Bible study and prayer meetings. They were no more preaching the gospel and seeing other friends of Jesus. Consequently, they became spiritually cold.

They started missing their personal morning devotion and quiet time. By the time they returned from the holiday, they were changed completely. They were spiritually dead. They were no more prayerful. They went back to their old bad habits. They lost the joy of salvation, and the peace of God was no more in their hearts. Peter and Mark became backsliders. They can be used as an example of a dead church.

WHAT DOES THE WORD CHURCH MEAN? The word church is not the building but the gathering together of friends of Jesus. They come together to fellowship and worship God with all their hearts. The friends of Jesus in Sardis at that time loved Jesus with all their hearts. But after some years, many of them stopped loving Jesus; only a few of them continued to love Jesus. The people and leaders in this church did not care to check their spiritual lives, to know whether they still loved Jesus with all their heart, soul and mind.

How do you know when a friend of Jesus has gone back from following Him? WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? i. Lack of fellowship with God ii. Loss of joy and peace of God was received at salvation that iii. Loss of assurance of salvation iv. Lack of prayer he or she becomes prayerless v. Missing or not attending fellowship regularly vi. No more love for God and His Word

TO COME ALIVE IN CHRIST, A SPIRITUALLY DEAD CHILD MUST: i. Be sorry for going away from Jesus ii. Sincerely turn away from all sinful lifestyle and disobedience to God iii. Pray and invite Jesus into his or her heart afresh iv. Read and think on the Word of God daily v. Avoid bad friends and bad company (2 Corinth. 6:17,18)

vi. Believe that God still loves him and has forgiven him. vii. Fellowship with God s children constantly. Know that Jesus still loves to be your friend, as you continue to obey Him. Remember that children who are not born again are spiritually dead. Do not continue in your sinful ways. Give your heart to Jesus NOW and come alive spiritually.
