Lesson 4: Adjective: Order and Pattern In the previous lessons, you studied that adjectives are words that describe both nouns and pronouns. Modifiers such as adjectives can be more than one and can come in different forms. This is why is it important to know the proper pattern and order especially when modifiers like adjectives come in a series. Basically, the modified noun and/or pronoun follows this pattern: determiner + adjective + noun What if there is more than one adjective? You should follow this adjective pattern. DETERMINER ADJECTIVE/S 1. quantity/number 2. quality/opinion 3. size 4. 5. shape 6. color proper adjective (nationality, place of origin) 8. purpose or qualifier a an the age NOUNS this/that that/those his/her/our/their/its 7.

Determiner: the Adjectives: colorful, pumpkin, yummy Noun: juice Determiner: an Adjectives: awesome, big, Halloween, new Noun: decoration quantity quality size age shape color proper adjective purpose awesome big new Halloween yummy colorful pumpkin Example Phrases: 1. an awesome, big, and new Halloween decoration 2. the yummy, colorful pumpkin juice Note: If the adjectives are all being used to describe the noun (known as coordinate adjectives), commas should separate them except the proper adjective or the object s origin and purpose. Using and is a good test to determine if the multiple adjectives you re using should follow this rule.
