  2. Students will be able to Recognize the importance of a good beginning and ending in an essay and how both elements work in tandem Begin to consider how to compose their own beginnings and endings for their own essays

  3. What is the purpose of the beginning and ending? Beginning- Attract the reader s attention, providing information on what is to come. Ending- Offer a sense of closure, satisfaction. Story is complete, questions are answered, arguments are made.

  4. What to expect from the beginning? Establish context Explain how the text fits into a larger discourse Address certain questions Explore an aspect of the subject Offer a brief description of the text s content, often in the form of the thesis statement

  5. How do we begin essays? Explain the larger context of your topic State your thesis Outline how you will organize your text Offer background information Define key terms or concepts Connect your subject to your readers interests or values Start with something that will provoke your readers interests Start with an anecdote Ask a question Jump right in

  6. How do we end essays? Restate the main point Discuss the implications of your argument End with an anecdote Refer to the beginning Propose some action
