Semester Review - Grammar Rules You and your partner will have 20 minutes to fill in as many blanks as possible. You may use your composition NB When the 20 minutes is up we will check it, the groups that have the highest amount of blanks will be rewarded. GOOD LUCK!! MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!!! Students will locate answers to their grammar review using various resources and working with a partner. I can locate some answers for the grammar review.
1. Three ways to fix a run-on Combine the sentences with a comma and a fanboy. Combine the sentences with a semicolon Combine the sentences with a period and a capital letter. HINT: You cannot combine two sentences with just a comma. 2. Simple, Compound, Complex A simple sentence has one subject joined with one verb. A compound sentence is one or more independent clauses joined together with a comma and a fanboy or a semicolon. A complex sentence is a dependent clause and an independent clause joined together. A subordinating conjunction is a word used in the dependent clause.
Independent and Dependent An independent clause has its own subject and its own verb and can stand alone as a sentence. A dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction (A White Bus)and must have an independent clause with to make sense. Appositive/Interrupters A noun or a noun phrase that renames the noun right beside it. It should have a comma on each side to set it apart. Direct Address When a person s name is specifically used at the beginning the sentence, a comma must be placed after it. When a person s name is specifically used at the end of a sentence, a comma must be placed in front of it. If it used in the middle of a sentence, there must be commas on both sides.
Apostrophe When a noun is being used to show ownership, use an apostrophe before or after the s. Verb Tense Make sure the same verb tense is kept throughout the essay. It it is past tense then all the verbs should be past tense. If it is present tense then all the verbs should be present tense. A, An Rule Use A when the word following starts with a consonant. Use An when the word following starts with a vowel. To, too, two Use to as a verb or a preposition Use too as an adverb Use two as a number
