Goal By the end of this lesson, you should understand how to write a Position Paper.
Position Paper A Position Paper is a 1-page document (length varies by conference) with five sections. Many Model UN conferences require you to submit a position paper (on each topic, if there are multiple). Some conferences even give Research Awards for best position papers. See pages 41-43 example in the Diplomat Guide to follow along.
Outline There are 5 parts to a Position Paper: 1. Topic Background 2. Past International Actions 3. Country Policy 4. Possible Solutions 5. Sources
Topic Background For Topic Background, write about the following: Definitions: Define the topic and key terms. History: Identify the causes that make this topic a global problem. Consequences: Describe the topic s effects on people and countries.
Past Intl Actions For Past International Action, apply SPEAR to the UN (and any related IGOs): 1. Speeches: What has the UN said about the topic? 2. Programs: Does the UN have any programs that address the topic?
Past Actions (contd) 3. Events: Has the UN hosted any major events related to the topic? 4. Agreements: What are the major international agreements on the topic? 5. Reports: Has the UN produced any major reports on the topic?
Country Policy Country Policy is the point of your Position Paper. Of your time spent writing, the most time should be spent on Country Policy. For Country Policy, start with a one sentence summary on what your country s perspective of the topic is. Apply SPEAR to your country.
Possible Solutions Possible Solutions is the action of your Position Paper. Explain at least three solutions you want to develop or create. Could explain anticipated solutions that goes against your country policy and how you plan to resolve those
