Normal Stress and Intonation: Statements Every sentence is divided into thought groups Each thought group has one focal word The focal word is stressed usually the last content word in the thought group. Content word: Usually a noun or a verb; usually new information Stressed means: Change of pitch on focal word could be mid to high, or mid to low. (step up or step down) Vowel in stressed syllable of focal word is elongated (longer) than other words in phrase.

  3. Statements--Example Now Miss Washington, before we get into all of the accident, I wanted to ask you a few questions about your children. Now Miss Washington,/before we get into all of the accident,/ I wanted to ask you a few questions/ about your children.

  4. Middle of statements--Unfinished Pitch change starting on stressed syllable of focal word Step up __ __ __ _________ Now Miss Washington OR Step down Now Miss Washington ___________ ___ ___ ___

  5. End of statement--Completed Strong DOWNWARD pitch change (step down) on final stressed word of sentence ___ ___ I wanted to ask you a few _____________________ questions (OR) questions ___ ___ / about your children. __________ ___ ___

  6. Normal Question Intonation Wh-questions: Almost same as statements, but sometimes an extra rise/fall on focal word: __ _____________________ __ How many do you have now? Yes/No questions: Pitch change upward ___ ___ ______________ Did you have any problems?

  7. Statement Questions Use upward pitch change on final focal word ___ ___ ___ __________________ He was a threat to the neighborhood?

  8. Tag Questions Upward pitch change on tag= uncertain/checking facts Downward pitch change on tag= certain Listen and identify certain or uncertain. Well he s not a threat anymore/, is he? Well, he s dead now,isn t he?
