Below the date, write the Challenge Question. Challenge Question: What math symbols do you know and how do they benefit you? Warm-up (independent, level 0 noise): You have 20 feet of fencing and you want to build a dog kennel that is a perfect square. What will the side lengths be? Vocabulary words Discuss the following math vocabulary with your group for 2 minutes. What does each word mean and how can we evaluate it? Side length Perimeter Area Perfect square
Our Dog Kennel Side length = 5 ft. Perimeter = 20 ft. Area = 25 ft Perfect square = Yes!!
Squares and Square Roots Square Root: A number that produces a specified quantity when multiplied by itself. Example: 8 = 64 Why doesn t 8 = 16? Discuss with your group for one minute.
Exponents What is an exponent? A quantity (or number) representing the power to which a given number is to be raised. What are some examples of exponents? 2 = 4 3 = 9 4 = ? 5 = ? 6 = 36 2 = 8 3 = ? 4 = 64 5 = ? 6 = 216
