  1. Welcome! Calculus Advising Session Info for Summer 2024 Presenter: Rodica Barbu Senior Academic Advisor Mathematics Department

Calculus Advising Session Flow May 28 July 25, 2024 Student needs to: Choose their Day 1 & Day 2 for SU24 ORT Read info provided on our website at: https://math.osu.edu/calculus-advising Math faculty & advisors will meet in person with students in the afternoon of their Day 1 in CH 240, between 4:00 5:30 p.m. Math Dept. will notify students by email of this opportunity. Students will be helped on a first-come-first-served basis. Faculty will provide students with Course Permissions slip including all their course options. These course permissions will be also emailed to students and entered in OnCourse.

  3. Info we use to make the math course recommendation for AU 24: MPT Math ACT / SAT scores AP Calculus A-Levels Transfer Credit (only college level) Major(s), minor(s) of interest Honors status

  4. Calculus I Options Course Major(s) Specific Info Math 1131 Business only - No trig functions covered - No course continuation Math 1140 & 1141 STEM only - Includes precalculus review - For qualifying students who had calculus in high school but NO college credit for it - This sequence is equivalent to Math 1151 Math 1151 All majors - Regular Calculus I - Trig functions covered Math 1156 Biology related - Same topics as math 1151 but from different book - Applications (word problems) are bio related only.

  5. Calculus II Options Course Major(s) Specific Information Math 1152 All majors - Regular calculus Math 1172 ENG only - - Less coverage of sequences & series Covers some topics on vectors from the beginning of Math 2153 Multivariable Calculus Notes: - Regular classes are taught in lecture & recitation style - Honors classes are up to 30 seats and meet daily with a regular faculty

  6. Honors Calculus Sequences Math 1181H & 2182H- Honors Calculus I & II: - medium level honors - require proofs for about half of the time/material Math 4181H & 4182H- Honors Analysis I & II: - calculus on steroids - abstract, proof-oriented - for math majors: 2 years in 1 since this sequence is better than math 2153, 3345, 4547 & 4548 and will replace all those four courses! - needed prerequisite for all other 5000H honors math courses.
