SECRETARIAT OF THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY REGIONAL MEETING OF HEADS OF PLANNING AND HEADS OF STATISTICS (HOPS) (Noumea, New Caledonia, 12-16 July 2010) Information Paper 9 REMOTE MONITORING AND SUPPORT Phil Bright GIS Specialist Statistics and Demography Programme
Remote support Imagine being able to Send and receive files with other Pacific Island colleagues and technical staff no matter where you are. Discuss a problem with colleagues and technical staff in 3 different countries all at the same time Watch someone demonstrating to you, on your computer how to use a software application with that person being in another country. Receive technical assistance with scanning, data processing etc from someone in another country who may also be providing technical assistance to other countries at the same time. this is now possible with a range of free communication and support technologies.
Skype peer to peer Between SDP staff, counterparts, or between counterparts Communicate on a regular basis, with 2+ people in chats, no matter where in the region Transfer files particularly those > 2MB (skype has resume support so even if internet connection drops out it will resume when connection is back) 3-way conversation + file transfer http://www.skype.com
Team Viewer remote control Tested by SDP for the first time with Solomon Islands and Vanuatu Censuses A light-weight application is installed on a machine (i.e server) and on the machine of person offering support Permanent access can be setup using password, otherwise users establish connections at both ends each time. Over Team Viewer connection applications can be run, files zipped, deleted etc Upload files, install / run software Copy files, monitor activity on server / pc http://www.teamviewer.com
What is needed for Skype/Team Viewer? Skype + other peer to peer applications Download and install skype : www.skype.com Internet connection skype generally can get through firewalls though IT might have to help out. Connection doesn t not have to be permanent files/discussions will come through when you come online at a later stage. Team Viewer Software installed by both parties : www.teamviewer.com A dedicated internet connection relatively fast if possible (this should be included in census/survey budgets. SDP can also assist as this saves $$$ on technical support)
