  1. Final Project Medical Terminology By: Maggie O Connor

  2. Root/CF- hydr/o = water Root/CF- nephr/o = kidney Hydronephrosis Suffix- osis = condition Definition = Dilation of the pelvis and calyces of a kidney

  3. Hydronephrosis is a condition in which urine overfills and backs up into the kidney causing it to swell or dilate. The swelling is caused by an inability for urine to drain from the kidney and as a result builds up in the kidney. This occurs from a blockage in the tubes that drain the urine from the kidneys. Overview

  4. There is 4 levels of hydronephrosis 1 and 2 being mild to moderate dilation and 3 and 4 being severe dilation. Symptoms include pain in the abdomen, blood in the urine, UTI, and fever. It is possible to not have symptoms. 5 Facts It can be diagnosed by use of an ultrasound Boys are 4-5 times more likely to be born with it than girls Patients are more likely to develop kidney stones

  5. Why I Choose This I choose to research this because I was diagnosed with hydronephrosis when I was young. My doctor said that it needed to be monitored but not treated because it isn t severe.

  6. Root- salping = tube Suffix- itis = inflammation Salpingitis Definition- inflammation of the fallopian (uterine) tube

  7. Salpingitis is a form of pelvic inflammatory disease and is usually caused by sexually transmitted infections that involve bacteria and are left untreated for a long period of time. Overview

  8. 5 Facts Salpingitis can cause ectopic pregnancy. It can result in infertility if left untreated. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition, but treatments can include antibiotics, or surgery in severe cases. Almost all cases are caused by a bacterial infection. Infection of one tube usually leads to the other, since the bacteria migrates via the nearby lymph vessels.

  9. Why I Choose We are all capable of developing this if we fail to take care of our reproductive system. Its important to remind women to visit the gynecologist if they are sexually active due to the nature of how this disease it caused by bacteria. This

  10. Root- traumat = wound Suffix- ic = pertaining to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Root/CF- encephal/o = brain Suffix- pathy = disease Definition- Brain degeneration due to repeated head traumas

  11. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a progressive and fatal brain disease associated with repeated traumatic brain injuries, including concussions and repeated blows to the head. It is also associated with the development of dementia. Overview

  12. 5 Facts CTE is a diagnosis made only during an autopsy by studying sections of the brain. CTE is rare but has been found in the brains of people who played football and other contact sports such as boxing. Symptoms include impaired cognition, impulsive behavior, lack in judgement, short term memory loss, depression, and emotional instability People with CTE may show other signs of neurodegeneration including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease Aaron Hernandez of the New England Patriots suffered from CTE which was discovered during his autopsy

  13. After watching the Aaron Hernandez documentary, it sparked an interest in the correlation of physical heath and mental health. Brain damage from repeated TBI s can be irreversible and its important that there is more awareness of CTE to help prevent young people in the future from developing it. CTE has also been found in the brains of military personal who were involved in explosions which can add to their PSTD which I don t think many people know about. Why I Choose This

  14. BREAKING NEWS

  15. Prefix- post = after Root- traumat = wound Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Suffix- ic = pertaining to Definition- Occurring after and caused by trauma

  16. PTSD occurs after significant trauma such as a life- threatening incident, loss of a loved one, abuse, torture, combat in war, or a high level of stress in daily life. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, physical reactions to reminders of the event, and difficulty concentraiting. Overview

  17. 5 Facts Alcohol and drug abuse are common in individuals who suffer from PTSD. An estimated 8% of Americans, 24.4 million people suffer from PTSD at any given time. This is the equivalent of the population of Texas. An estimated 1 out of every 9 women develop PTSD, making them twice as likely as men to suffer. People with PTSD have among the highest rates of healthcare service use. It wasn t until 1980 that PTSD was recognized as a psychobiological mental disorder and added to the American Psychiatric Association s diagnostic and statistical book of medical disorders.

  18. PTSD is more common than most people think and is often associated with the military or being a result of combat, which is not wrong, however many other Americans who were never enlisted may also suffer from PTSD from experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Why I Choose This

  19. Prefix- quadri = four Root- pleg = paralysis Quadriplegia Suffix- ia = condition Definition- paralysis of all four limbs

  20. The primary cause of quadriplegia is a spinal cord injury, but other conditions such as cerebral palsy and strokes can cause a similar appearing paralysis. Quadriplegia occurs when the cervical vertebra of the spinal cord is injured. There are two forms: Overview Incomplete- characterized by having some movement/sensation in affected areas and partial loss of function. Complete- characterized by having no movement/sensation in affected areas and total loss of function.

  21. 5 Facts Injuries involving your C1-C3 result in the severest forms of impairment including possible need for assisted breathing Men suffer more spinal cord injuries than women People with spinal cord injuries may not sweat. You might still be able to become a parent. Before the 1940 s, life expectancy was 2 years

  22. There are so many other complications that occur with paralysis and in a world were perfect body image an unrealistic beauty standards are prevalent; it is important to be grateful for what are bodies can DO and to never take that for granted. Why I Choose This
