  2. Who is affected by the menopause? All women! Average age 51 years symptoms can start 45 years 1 in 100 women under 40 years Around 80% have symptoms 25% have severe symptoms

  3. Hot flushes Night sweats Heavy / light periods Joint and muscle pains Hair and skin changes Palpitations Headaches / worsening migraines Weight / body shape Symptoms of the menopause

  4. Worsening PMS Tiredness Poor memory Poor concentration Lack of interest and motivation Inability to multi-task Brain fog Symptoms of the menopause

  5. Psychological symptoms of the menopause Anxiety Irritability Panic attacks Feeling low Mood swings Feeling frustrated Tearful Loss of self-esteem Loss of self-confidence

  9. Hormone replacement therapy - HRT Nota one size fits all Numerous different preparations Oestrogen replacement (patches/spray/gels) Progesterone to protect womb lining (not needed if no womb) Testosterone for some women

  10. Breast cancer Breast cancer is common Increased risk of breast cancer with: Increasing age Family history Obesity Alcohol Reduced exercise

  11. Menopause and work Retirement age increasing Around 3.5 million women aged 50-65 in employment Having symptoms can lead to: Less engagement with job Less job satisfaction Being more likely to quit their job Menopause is often a silent issue

  12. Menopause and work 10% of women stop work all together 81% women said their symptoms affected them at work 87% stated that their supervisor or line manager would benefit from menopause training Nearly 25% had time off work
