  1. Civil Registration & Vital Statistics Program Module 11, Chapter 5 Mental & Behavioural Disorders Dr. Nandalal Wijesekera (MBBS, MSc., MD) Consultant MCCD certification & ICD coding Vital Strategies

  2. Module 11 Turn to Chapter 7 of vol. 1 Page 142 of work book

  3. Important points for module 11 Categories range from F00 to F99 Of the 100 available categories, 78 have been allocated The chapter is divided into 11 blocks There are 2 asterisk categories (F00 & F02), relating to dementia in Alzheimers disease & in other diseases classified elsewhere

  4. Important points for module 11 Each category is prefaced by a comprehensive description of the disorders included therein ( Vol. 1) There is emphasis on behavioural disorders as well as mental disorders

  5. Important points for module 11 Block F00-F09 covers organic mental disorders i.e. disorders resulting from a physical cause, E.g. Dementia in Alzheimer s disease Block F10-F19 covers disorders due to the use of psychoactive or other substances

  6. Important points for module 11 Here the third character indicates the substance involved &, The fourth character indicates the clinical state For an e.g. F12.2 F12 indicates that the substance is a cannabinoid &, .2 indicates that the pt. is clinically dependent on the drug

  7. Few Examples Before Coding 11 Ex; 2 - Psychogenic Impotence Look up Impotence in index (vol. 3) - Impotence (sexual)(psychogenic) -> F52.2 Look up Vol. 1 for confirmation

  8. More Examples Before Coding 11 Ex; 7- Flashbacks & episodes of bizarre behaviour 2ry to use of the drug LSD, last used 25 years ago. 1st determine what type of sub. LSD is, Find LSD in table of drugs & chemicals (Sec. 3) of index (vol. 3) The table sends us to T40 in the tabular list (vol. 1)

  9. Examples . 11: Ex- 7 From here we can see that LSD is a hallucinogen Look up Flashbacks in index, (vol. 3) Flashbacks (residual to alcohol or drug use) - code to F10-F19 with a 4th character of .7

  10. Examples 11: Ex- 7 If we ref. to F10-F19 in the tabular list, we find a code that refer to Mental & Behavioral disorders due to the use of hallucinogens, F16 (vol.1) It says to See before F10 for subdivisions Index has already indicated that for flashbacks we should use .7 as 4th character

  11. Examples 11: Ex- 7 Here the flashbacks are included (Vol. 1) Therefore the correct code is F16.7 We need to code the external cause also. So you should identify the type of drug using the table of drugs & chemicals, (vol.3). Then we need a code from chapter 20 which is listed in column 4, undetermined intent, Y12.9 (Vol. 1) ???

  12. Examples 11 Ex- 7 The reason for selecting undetermined intent is that, we are not told whether the pt. took LSD -deliberately, -forcibly or -ingested accidentally, & therefore we cannot make any assumptions about what happened 4th character .9 comes because it is unspecified (vol. 1)

  13. Examples 11: Ex- 7 We could assign a 5th character (activity code) also for this code 5th character 9 is the appropriate code as they have not specified during which activity this has happened (vol. 1) Therefore the correct code is Y12.99 So the final codes are F16.7 & Y12.99

  14. More examples 11 Ex; 10 - Paranoid Schizophrenia Look up Schizophrenia in index (vol. 3) Schizophrenia - Paranoid (type) -> F20.0 Look up Vol.1 for confirmation

  15. Few hints before coding - Module 11 Exercises 4, 5, 7 & 12 has two codes each & others only one

  16. Answers for module 11 1. F63.3 2. F52.2 3. F10.6 4. G30.1 , F00.1* 5. G10 , F02.2* 6. F81.0 7. F16.7, Y12.99 8. F41.0 9. F31.4 10. F20.0
