Natural Sciences and Technology Grade 5 Term 2: Matter and Materials Metals- and Non-metals (PPT 1)
Topic 2 Uses of Metals Other properties of metals Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology Term 2, Topic 2
Special properties of metals Metals conduct heat. Only iron rusts - some metals tarnish or become dull. Some metals are magnetic and others are not. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology Term 2, Topic 2
Magnets and metals A magnet is a material or object that produces a magnetic field. This magnetic field is invisible, but is responsible for the most notable property of a magnet: a force that pulls on other materials, such as iron, and attracts or repels other magnets. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology Term 2, Topic 2
Metals and temperature Why is it useful that metals can conduct heat and cold? Useful for cooking (pots and pans) Thermos flasks keep liquid hot or cold Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology Term 2, Topic 2
Corrosion This occurs when metals lose their shiny appearance and start to become dull and damaged. It happens to metals when they are exposed to different elements in the environment. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology Term 2, Topic 2
Types of metal corrosion Rust has a reddish brownish colour; found on iron when it corrodes Tarnish - found on silver teapots, trays, trophies and jewellery Patina thin, green layer that sometimes forms on the surface of copper, bronze, and similar metals Black spots that appear on brass Aluminium oxide - grey-white coating that forms on aluminium Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology Term 2, Topic 2
The importance of knowing about corrosion If we know about corrosion, then we can protect certain metals. We can paint metal or steel poles or window frames so that they can last longer. Metals used in construction and transport are carefully treated. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology Term 2, Topic 2
