  1. CSO Administrative Data Centre Seminar CSO Administrative Data Centre Seminar 8 November 2022 2. Data Centres Metered Electricity Consumption Niamh Shanahan Environment and Climate Division

  2. Overview Administrative data received from ESB under Section 30 of the Statistics Act, 1993 Dataset contains consumption data on all metered electricity connections from 2015 Two metered electricity consumption releases, published simultaneously: Metered Electricity Consumption release release on all metered electricity connections Thematic release on Data Centres 2020 releases published January 2022, 2021 releases published May 2022 2

  3. Identification The release was compiled by developing a register of data centre electricity meter numbers. To identify the MPRNs of data centres located in the main dataset: Used reports on data centres by other organisations, business register, and internet searches Searched known names and aliases Checked customers with high consumption Examined customers located in specific areas such as business parks location for data centres is dependent on conditions such as available electricity supply and transmission cables 3

  4. Key Findings Data centres consumption increased 32% between 2020 and 2021 % of total consumption by data centres rose from 5% in 2015 to 14% in 2021, an increase of 2,757 GWh Total metered electricity consumption increased by 16% between 2015 - 2021 4

  5. Key Findings Consumption by data centres follows an upward trend Consumption increased from 290 GWh in Q1 2015 to 1,058 GWh in Q4 2021 Increase between Q1 2015 and Q4 2021 was 265% 5

  6. Results 6

  7. Data usage Results have been referenced by media on ongoing basis as well as by policy makers Eurostat is developing a request on data centres consumption and these results will form an input into Eurostat Energy Statistics Future data releases will be important in light of ongoing discussion on data centres 8
