  2. Structure 1. 2 preliminary clarifications regarding my understanding of sustainable and lifestyles 2. The problem 3. State of the art 4. Knowledge gap 5. Swiss potential Paul Burger Division of Sustainability 16.03.2025 2

  3. (1a) Sustainable sustainable : A society X is sustainable if it is able to provide a good human life to all without compromising the ability for upcoming generations in X to provide a good human life to all Sustainability is about well-being, justice, fairness Taking into account circumstances of justice , i.e. scarcity and fragility of resources Sustainable growth = economic development serving human well-being and considering scarcity and fragility Paul Burger

  4. (1b) lifestyle/s High ambiguity! Within social sciences = component of social structure analysis that allows getting a more differentiated picture on general social groups. Talk of a sustainable lifestyle is beside the point. More unspecific meaning as conducting one s life related to values, norms, standards (in German: Lebensf hrung) Paul Burger Division of Sustainability 16.03.2025 4

  5. (2) The problem Sustainable lifestyle = what general values, norms, standards should steer individual life- perfomance to cope with scarcity and fragility? Paul Burger Division of Sustainability 16.03.2025 5

  6. (3) State of the art Well-being, today income, consumption, material performance Non-paternalism; liberalism Well-being, tomorrow? Happiness; dematerialized consumption patterns, sufficiency; (local products, urban farming etc.) Non-paternalism; restricted liberalism? Simply an open unanalyzed field Competing metrics of well-being Preference satisfaction; basic needs, capabilities, Rawlsian primary goods (resourcism). Paul Burger

  7. Knowledge gap To what general criteria for well-being expressing sustainable lifestyle (in the second non-technical sense of the word) should a sustainable growth policy be directed and how could they be measured? Paul Burger Division of Sustainability 16.03.2025 7

  8. Swiss basis Example NFP-proposal on energy consumption Topic: Analysing socio-economic drives and barriers to substantially reduce energy consumption in Switzerland Strength: really good Weakness: science policy still directed to primarily support technology and the like..... Good basis in different fields in need of political support, including seed money Paul Burger Division of Sustainability 16.03.2025 8
