Types of Feminism There are three strands of feminism, these are: Marxist feminists look at how women are exploited in a capitalist society by men, thus combining Marxism and Feminism. Marxist Feminism Liberal feminists look to seek equal rights for women and believe individuals should be treated according to their independent merits. Liberal Feminism Radical feminists stress the main enemy of women to be patriarchy, although they do not believe male domination to be inevitable. Radical feminists main intention is to release women from patriarchy. Radical Feminism
Marxist Feminism Marxist Feminists look at how women are exploited and that this benefits the capitalist society. Ansley (1972) The emotional support that wives provides help to support the husband s frustration and this frustration comes from the stress of working within a capitalist system.
Marxist Feminism Veronica Beechey Beechey believes that housewives carry out two functions: 1. To provide care for current and future workers 2. To be a cheap reserve army of labour. Women are takers of shit
Radical Feminism Radical Feminists see the exploitation of women as being a result of having men dominate society. Delphy and Leonard (1992) Family role maintains patriarchy Family is an economic system whereby men benefit at the expense of women.
Liberal Feminism Liberal Feminists don t blame capitalism or men for unequal treatment of women. Liberal Feminists believe that laws such as the Sex Discrimination act are making life better for women although equality still does not exist.
Liberal Feminism Sommerville Radical Feminists fail to ignore that progress has been made by women. As women get remarried after they divorce it does show that they want relationships with men.
Task Read the two scenarios and write down what each strand of Feminist might have to say about them. Extension: compare your thoughts to the person sat next to you to identify if they are the same.
New Right The New Right take on a very right wing perspective and has very traditional views. The New Right are not a fan of the welfare state or universal benefits, they believe that universal benefits should be abolished and this would encourage people to develop dependency.
New Right The New Right see the nuclear family as being best for society. This is because of the values that the nuclear family possesses. The New Right do not like single parent families at all! Murray sees the traditional family to be under threat and Murray made this link to the idea of this culture of dependency . The culture of dependency is the idea of people living off benefits rather than working for money. Charles Murray (1989)
