MICROAGGRESSION/MICROINEQUITY (1970-1973) MICROAGGRESSIONS are a product of racist ideology and can define a marginalized experience Social others are microaggressed hourly, daily, weekly, monthly! Unconscious: Little awareness of MEANING AND EFFECT 1. Conscious and deliberate: generally expressed in micro situations allowing the perpetrator some degree of ANONYMITY FROM RACIST IDEOLOGIES 2.

MICROAGGRESSIONS AND POWER Justify INSULTS (rooted in stereotypes) Defends unintentional DISCRIMINATION Perpetuates OVERWHELMING RESPONSES by social others (showcasing lack of knowledge) Excuses subtle DISRESPECTFUL undertones Hinders a positive EXPERIENCES (bee stings/papercuts) Minimizes validity of long-term MENTAL HEALTH issues Redefines social hierarchy with intrusive and invasive but UNQUANTIFIABLE displays of racism

  4. THREE TYPES MICROINSULT - (Often unconscious) 1. Behavioral/verbal remarks or comments that convey rudeness MICROASSAULT - (Often conscious) 2. Explicitly racial denigrations MICROINVALIDATION - (Often unconscious) 3. Verbal comments or behaviors that exclude, negate, or nullify

  5. ARE YOU A MICROAGGRESSOR? We can (consciously and unconsciously) create and enforce uncomfortable, violent and unsafe realities by using microaggressions. Albeist Language Bi-racial Unacceptance (One Drop Rule/Mulatto) Ethnic Melting Pot Race/Color Domination Physical Appearance and Power

EXTENSIONS OF MICROAGGRESSIONS SYMBOLS: Displaying swastikas, confederate flag, or calendars that objectify women/men DOWNPLAYING: Employee asks a colleague of color how she acquired a job, implying through affirmative action/quotas TARGETING: You don t look Hispanic ; Would not have ever guessed you were gay. ENVIRONMENTAL SLIGHT: Asking an Asian-American where they were born, conveying that all people of Asian descent are international. INSULTS: Jokes at the expense of someone s identity

RESPONSES TO MICROAGGRESSING CODE SWITCHING: Changing to fit the environment (Assimilation to one standard dominant ideology or opposition/rebellion) IMPOSTER SYNDROME: Feeling undeserving or unaware of strengths (Source of resilience or pain from why try? ) LABELING THEORY: Fitting the label (Ethnocentrism or feeding into negative stereotypes)

MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES Hiding/Invisibility Not belonging/Abnormal Internalized Discrimination Untrustworthiness Identity Development or Disruption Preemptive Lifestyle (fear/anticipating hardship) Psychological Distress Pressure Representing Race Imposed Mental Disorders Inferiority/Self-esteem Issues Intimidated/Threatened
