  6. 8th Science Curricular Outcomes: MS-PS4-2 - Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Sound waves interact with matter by processes of reflection, absorption, transmittal, and diffraction. Students will describe how stiffness, density, and temperature of materials affect the speed of sound.

  7. Habit(s) of Learning: Joy-Filled Collaboration: 6th grade students were joyfully collaborating with 8th graders during the interview process. Courageous Designing: 8th graders needed to design a podcast that included their story and the 6th grade stories. The students received feedback on their first draft and rewrote and re-recorded. Gracious Communicating: It can be challenging for students to write a script and record a podcast when everyone needs to participate. They needed gracious communicating to accomplish the task at hand.

  8. See Gods Story: Creation Fall Redemption God tells us that our story isn t over, that He is working and that all of our story matters. Restoration We use our stories to encourage, guide, and improve other people s stories. We see our stories as a gift to be shared We are given roles and stories that are a part of God s Story We have missteps, brokenness, and difficulties on our journey.

  9. 6th Storyline: See [____] Differently. 6th grade students can use their story to help incoming middle school students see their upcoming year differently.

  10. 8th English Storyline: Seeing Him in the midst of ____. The 8th graders were invited to reflect on their middle school years and search for God in their good moments and in their toughest moments.

  11. 8th Science Storyline: We sought to Dive In to our roles as Community Builders by using our knowledge of sound waves to create a high quality podcast that would benefit our incoming 6th graders.

  12. Throughlines: Throughline #1: Community Builders- We are strengthening the connections between our elementary and middle school students. 6th and 8th graders built community through meaningful conversations in the interview process. We see our story as a gift and something to be shared so we can hopefully allow others to flourish, and build a flourishing community in the process.

  13. Formational Learning Experience: Real needs: Fifth graders entering 6th grade can often feel uneasy and anxious about the middle school journey ahead of them. The podcasts will help them to feel more confident and comfortable heading into their middle school years. Real people: Fifth graders going to Denver Christian Middle School Real work: We used our middle school experience to conduct interviews, write a script, learn about sound waves, and record a podcast.

  14. INVITE

  15. NURTURE Students were nurtured by seeing the partnership and collaboration between the teachers. Students were nurtured by being affirmed in the power of their story.

  16. EMPOWER Students were empowered by producing a high quality podcast through recording, receiving feedback, revising, and editing their podcasts. Example of a Podcast: Click Here! As a whole, they were significantly invested because this project was not for them but for others.

  17. Student Reflections: I used my story and my experiences in 6th grade to help other people who are about to go into 6th grade. I was able to give advice and wisdom to the incoming 6th graders. It can be scary to go into middle school and into a new grade. There are a lot of big changes that you will encounter in 6th grade, but I am glad I can share tips to help make the transition easier for them. I think that our podcasts will benefit the incoming 6th graders. I used my story and experiences to help incoming 6th graders to be confident, encouraging, and excited for 6th grade. I also hope that with people hearing my story they would be encouraged to share their story with people. I also think that this assignment helped me not to be so afraid in sharing my story and experiences with people. After this podcast I was very excited and ready to share my story with people even if I do not feel confident with sharing my story. I think that sharing our experiences with people only makes us stronger and helps us through the journey of life.

  18. Teacher Reflections: Students were quickly able to identify the deep learning connected (taking what we learn about sound waves to create something to benefit others). Students were remarkably vulnerable and candid with their stories. They recognized that their stories matter and they were able to use the ups and downs of their stories to benefit others. Students were encouraged to reflect on their middle school years and see God in the different events they experienced. Through seeing God in the midst of these years, they can come to a deeper understanding of God s love and acceptance of them.
