Atlantic Charter (1941). Established the ideas of a general security system. 1942, Allied Nations met in Washington and pledged support of the Atlantic Charter. establish a system of general security, the United Nations or UN.
United Nations/UN. 48 countries joined the international peace keeping organization. Protect against aggression. Based in New York. General Assembly. each nation could cast 1 vote on a broad range of issues Security Council . 11 members: 5 permanent (US. USSR, Britain, France, China). has power to investigate and settle disputes. Each could veto any security council action. Provision was to prevent a bloc vote to override others.
Purpose of the United Nations Maintain international peace and security. Use collective actions to maintain peace. Suppress acts of aggression. Establish friendly relationships between nations. Promote human rights and respect for all. Prevent persecution of races, sex, languages, or religions. Encourage economic growth. Handle humanitarian problems.
After World War II. W. Europe In ruins Economic turmoil.

Stalin ignored Yalta Agreement installed or secured communist governments in Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Poland, & Yugoslavia. d. Clear violation of rights to free elections. e. Promoted Potsdam Conference.
Marshall Plan for Europe. Proposed by General George Marshall.
Marshall Plan (1947) U.S. financial to give over $17 billion of aid to rebuild Europe and to establish assistance program to provide food, machinery, & other materials to European countries. All nations of Europe welcomed the program, except for the Soviet Union and its communist allies. . Congress debated program. When Russia seized Czechoslovakia, Congress approved program.
MacArthurs Plan for Japan. Proposed by General MacArthur.
MacArthur Plan. US occupation. Destroy militarism in Japan. Ensure a democratic government. Introduce economic reforms. Establish land reform, divide up large estates Government to sell land to tenant farmers. Create independent labor unions.
