NATIONAL GUARD / RESERVE (MDAY/PART-TIME) PROS CONS No living quarters provided and no housing allowance (BAH) Tricare is available at low cost for you and dependents Life skills training and college credit equivalency transfer No cost of living pay (BAS, COLA) Free college up to a Masters Degree (GI Bill), plus a stipend to go to college (Can attend school full time) Part-time pay(1 weekend/month, 2 week annual training) You cannot quit (contract bound) Retirement after 20 years (50% of base pay when reaching retirement age) Need to have a civilian job Comradery No early morning PT Chain of Command has far less control over your life Any extra duties are only on Drill weekends Can have a civilian job

ACTIVE GUARD/RESERVE (AGR) BEST OF BOTH WORLDS PROS CONS You cannot quit (contract bound) Additional pay for housing (BAH) Cannot attend school during work hours, but are able to take night classes, hybrid classes, or online classes. Cost of Living Pay (BAS, COLA) Full Time Pay Still have to do 1 weekend/month drill, and 2 weeks annual training. Free medical care (Tricare) for you and dependents with civilian doctors Life skills training and college credit equivalency transfer Free college up to a Masters Degree (GI Bill), plus a stipend to go to college (Can attend school full time) Retirement after 20 years (50% of base pay) Comradery Any extra duties are only on during work or training hours
