As far as Britain is concerned, their time was really between the eighth and eleventh centuries. But there are still traces where they live on, if you know where to look including your own address. Many of the place names that are so familiar to us today actually come from Anglo Saxon roots. If your home town s name ends in bury, borough, ton or ley, then the Anglo Saxons started a settlement there. Your next question is, what do these roots mean? 1. Monday 27th March TBAT: understand the different ways people lived in Roman Britain. 3 in 3 The Romans lived in a wide variety of homes depending on whether they were wealthy or poor. The poor lived in cramped apartments in the cities or in small shacks in the country. The rich lived in private homes in the city or large villas in the country. While the poor and the slaves lived in small shacks or cottages in the countryside, the wealthy lived in large expansive homes called villas. The Roman villa of a wealthy Roman family was often much larger and more comfortable than their city home. They had multiple rooms including servants' quarters, courtyards, baths, pools, storage rooms, exercise rooms, and gardens. They also had modern comforts such as indoor plumbing and heated floors. 1. They also introduced lots of luxuries into civilisation, such as public baths, roads and even plumbing! Monday 27th March TBAT: understand the different ways people lived in Roman Britain. Poor Romans in the countryside lived in small villages of wooden huts with thatched roofs. Each hut would be very small, usually only having one room with a fire in the centre. This fire would be used for light, heat and for cooking. The floor would have been covered with animal skins and there would be simple furniture, such as benches for beds.
Monday 27th March TBAT: understand the different ways people lived in Roman Britain. A Roman villa was a luxurious estate for rich Romans in the countryside. They were large and comfortable and had several rooms, including servant's quarters and exercise rooms. Some villas even had underfloor heating! A hypocaust was a system which pumped hot air from a fire around a system of tunnels underneath the villa s main floor.
