How Many Phases of the moon are there? There are 8 phases of the moon -Waxing gibbous -First Quarter -Waning Crescent -New Moon The lunar cycle takes 29.5 days -Waning Gibbous -Last (third) quarter -Waxing Crescent -Full Moon
New Moon During a new moon no moon is visible
Waxing Crescent Narrow strip of light visible making moon look like a crescent Light is on the right Moon visible in late afternoon and just before sunset in southwestern part of sky
First Quarter Half of the hemisphere is lit and visible from Earth Moon looks like a semicircle. Light is on the right Visible in afternoon and evening sets around midnight
Waxing Gibbous Three-quarters of lit hemisphere visible from Earth. Shaped like an upened football Light is on the right Moon visible in late afternoon on the Eastern side of sky
Full Moon The entire lit hemisphere of the moon is visible from Earth. Moon appears as a full circle Full moon rises when the sun sets and the moon sets when the sun rises.
Waning Gibbous Three-quarters of lit hemisphere visible from Earth. Shaped like an upened football Light is on the left Size of moon decreases over the next few days Moon is visible in the morning just before sunrise
Third/Last Quarter Half of the hemisphere is lit and visible from Earth Moon looks like a semicircle. Light is on the left Moon rises at midnight and sets at noon
