  1. The mission of the MountaineerChalleNGe Academy (MCA) is to train and mentor youth to become contributing members of society using the 8 Core Components in a quasi- military environment during a 22-week residential and one year Post-Residential follow-up program.

  2. Similar to JROTC / technical education opportunity Earn a high school diploma We offer 16-18 year old youth an opportunity to improve their confidence, integrity, self-esteem, develop critical life skills, become productive citizens in society The Challenge Academy partners with schools and Youth Services organizations

  3. Residential Phase 22 weeks The Residential Phase is centered around instruction in the 8 Core Components, including the skills needed for the TASC and WIN tests. Computer assisted learning, traditional instruction and non-traditional settings offer a variety of academic environments. Post Residential Phase 1 Year Post graduation, Cadets take what they have learned and pursue their goals. Mentors are there to help keep them focused and to help them reach their full potential.

  5. MCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education. The Academy is a helpful resource for students not on track to graduate or students that are considering dropping out. It was designed to be an intervention program to assist teens.

  6. Developmental Positive reinforcement, self-discipline Leadership, behavior management and motivation Time-management Productive member of society!

  7. ChalleNGe offers a High School Diploma to students who qualify as part of the Option 1 Pathway. ChalleNGe is recognized as a special, alternative education program by the WV State Department Code 18-2-6. All MCA cadets that meet criteria will receive Diplomas from their home high on Graduation Day. In addition, a variety of training certifications are available!

  8. National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program Career Technical Education Pathway (similar to JROTC) Language Arts Reading and Writing Math Science Social Studies Score a 500 or above on each section Earn a Diploma* from your home High School!! *Must be enrolled in a Public School in West Virginia*

  9. Core subjects Math Science Social Studies Language Arts / Reading & Writing CTE (Career and Technical Education) Citizenship, Character, Traditions Management leadership principles Communication and awareness Life Skills and career investigation

  10. The National Eligibility criteria prevent the State program from accepting teens with a felony background. Teens cannot be adjudicated for anything equivalent to a felony. Teens cannot have felony charges pending. ChalleNGe conducts a broad screening of all applicants to ensure that a positive, safe learning environment is maintained. ChalleNGe is not intended to be a boot camp for youth offenders!

There are four classes a year: January & July at Camp Dawson / Kingwood April & Oct at Montgomery Applications must be received 30 days prior to the beginning of each class All teens in a class start together and end together In the quasi-military environment, each week builds on the accomplishments of all previous weeks

  12. Your life so far (16-18 years) Average Life = 75 years Public School (72) MCA (22) If you are two grades behind (weeks left to complete education)

  13. Must meet requirements put forth by the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Cooperative Agreement Between 16 & 18 years of age on the start of class. Academically At-Risk WV Resident Free of Illegal Drugs No Felony History Mentally & Physically Able Must have Health Insurance

  14. Complete full Cadet Application and mail it in. Attend a scheduled Orientation. Submit additional follow-up information, if needed. Meet Eligibility criteria.   16. QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 25 years of age. Should be the same gender. Must be in reasonable geographic proximity. Will not be of the same household, immediate relatives (mother, father, step-mother/father, brother/sister, step-brother/sister, foster parent, legal guardian) or, ChalleNGe staff members, their spouses, or significant others.

  17. REQUIREMENTS Background check state police. 1 Mentor training session, available on OPI dates(Orientation/Processing/Interview) and Program weeks 4, 6, & 8 (subject to change). 4 hours minimum per month with graduate, physical interaction 2 times month (recommended). Help with placement in 25+ hrs/week either working, in school fulltime, military, volunteer, etc. = positive member of society!

  18. Mission is to provide selected MCA graduates with Career&Technical Education leading to industry recognized certification and job placement within that trade. MCA Graduate High School Diploma 17 -20 years old Manufacturing Tech Medical Tech Pre-Apprenticeship Horizontal Construction Energy Sector (Subject to change)
