  2. Story Text (shortened and adapted) of Mr and Mrs Griffin s remarks and comments. We were beginning to get more and more fed up with the holiday by the sea . We always used to go to the south coast regularly for a fortnight every summer. There wasn t a chance to have a proper summer holiday last year, so we decided we d better have some sort of a winter holiday. Some friends of ours had told us we might not enjoy skiing holiday, that it was always so cold you had to go skiing just to keep warm. we only had eight days instead of our normal fortnight away. All together, with the return flight, accommodation, etc., it came to about 125 for the three of us. And it was worth every penny. I mean, I work hard all the year round. I need a complete change and I m willing to pay for it. I d certainly recommend a holiday like this to anyone. We saved up for it, by the way, by cutting down on luxuries.

  3. Questions I. What have the Griffins just done? 2 Where did they use to spend their holiday? 3 How were they beginning to feel about this? 4 What happened to Mr. Griffin last spring? 5 Why did not he have a proper summer holiday? 6 How did they feel about the idea of a winter holyday at first? 7 Why did they feel this way ? 8 How much did it cost all together ?

  4. Important grammar notes taken from the story: 1. Used to + infinitive': We use this expression to talk about habits or repeated actions in the past which we don't do in the present. We also use it to talk about states in the past which are no longer true. For example: I used to have long hair (but now I have short hair). They used to live in India (but now they live in Germany). With the negative and the question it's 'use' and not 'used': Did you use to be a teacher? Did he use to study French? She didn't use to like chocolate, but she does now. I didn't use to want to have a nice house.

  5. 2.'Would, might+ infinitive' We can also use 'would + infinitive' to talk about a habit or repeated action in the past. We usually use 'would + infinitive' in this way when we're telling a story about the past. So, we can say: - When I was a student, we would often have a drink after class on a Friday. When I lived in Italy, we might go to a little restaurant near our house.
