Reading Information on Weekly Newsletter each week. Story always listed at top of newsletter. New story every other week. Comprehension and vocabulary quiz every other Thursday. Working on building reading fluency . Goal by end of 2nd grade: 90 wpm Working on comprehension skills such as: character/setting, problem/solution, author s purpose, main idea and details, making predictions, inferencing AR (Accelerated Reader)
Language/Spelling Spelling Tests-Each Thursday. Language Skills: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, etc. Writing complete sentences with correct capitalization, punctuation, and subject/verb agreement. Story writing Cursive
Math Daily math schedule includes a math warm-up, lesson over new skill. New skill taught almost every day. Pace of math curriculum is very fast in order to cover all 2nd grade objectives. Basic fact quiz every Wednesday. At the beginning of the year this quiz has 10 problems and the students are given one minute to complete. After all of the addition and subtraction facts are covered, we will have mixed up addition and subtraction quizzes. This activity is to help build memorization of basic facts. Homework to review the basic facts and the weekly skills.

Typical Homework *read 20 minutes daily -book bags & read weekly story at least once *study spelling, vocabulary, and math facts daily *twice weekly there will be math page, one to review facts, one to review a math skill *building responsibility & independence
Absences & Tardies *Make-Up work: some may be sent home, graded work must be completed at school. *Send an excuse note stating why the student was absent, please use first and last legal name. * Tardy Bell is at 7:50 am; tardiness has a negative impact on student achievement.
Discipline/Conduct Sheet Conduct Sheet in Blue Folder. It needs to be signed each week. Rewards for zero to one conduct marks. Verbal warning, then a folder sign. 1 mark= 10 minutes off recess 2 marks= 15 minutes off recess 3 marks= sit out all of recess/contact parent 4 marks in a day or 6 in a week= office referral
Food at school: *Please only send store bought, sealed items with list of ingredients. Items from Vincek s, Donut Shop, etc.-- please ask that they seal the box at the store. We do not encourage items without ingredients listed. *Due to student food allergies; sharing food items at lunch, in the class, on the bus is not allowed. *Parents may eat with their child on Wednesdays.
