MSW & MSWQY Overview For applicants with a BSW: MSW Non-thesis: 45 credits over three terms with a summer block placement MSW Thesis: 45 credits over 3 terms including a 27 credit thesis MSW with Integrated Bachelor of Civil Law/Bachelor of Laws (BCL/JD) For applicants with a BA/BSc: MSWQY is a 30 credit 2-term qualifying year (no degree) that gives eligibility to applying to the MSW Non-thesis program

MSW Program Requirements: Non-thesis Program Required courses: 9 credits Anti-Racist Practice (SWRK 605) Research for Social Justice (SWRK 653) Advanced Social work in Quebec* (SWRK 527) (previously SWRK 425) Complementary courses: 21 credits 24 credits of 600- level Social Work courses (up to two courses --6 credits can be taken in another McGill department or another institution at the graduate level with advisor permission) Fieldwork:15 credits SWRK 664 Intensive Adv Field Placement SWRK 665 Advanced Field Seminar *If SWRK 527 (previously SWRK 425) has already been completed 3 credits will be replaced by an additional complementary course Total Program Credits: 45

There is a very limited number and choice of concurrent MSW field placements available during the fall and, and fewer complementary course options.

There is a very limited number and choice of concurrent MSW field placements available during the fall. For the 3 summer complementary courses, up to 2 can be taken outside of the school and one could be a tutorial, conditional on professor availability.

  14. Joint MSW/Law Program (MSW/BCL-JD) 1st year is comprised of law courses. Social Work courses require manual registration and students must be registered for at least one SW course every term: Request for Registration/Course Changes | Student Records - McGill University Required courses: (9 credits) Anti-Racist Practice (SWRK 605) Research for Social Justice (SWRK 653) *Advanced Social work in Quebec (SWRK 527) (previously SWRK 425 Complementary courses (12-15 credits) 15 credits of 500- or 600- level Social Work courses Fieldwork (12 credits) Joint MSW/Law ISP (12 credits) *If SWRK 527 (previously SWRK 425) has already been completed, 3 credits will be replaced a complementary course Total MSW Program Credits: 45

MSW Terms of Study Full-time non-thesis students: Fall & Winter Term: register for consecutive full-time terms (15 credits) Summer Term: register for Fieldwork credits (SWRK664/ 12 Credits) and Advanced Field Placement Seminar (SWRK 665/3Credits) Part-time non-thesis students register for a minimum of 3 credits per term (fall and winter); summer session is optional, not with the seminar course Note: A part-time student who registers for 12 or 15 credits in any one semester, shifts to full-time status and must complete all program requirements within 3 years of initial registration

Time Limitation for Completion of MSW Studies Full-time students: 3 years from initial registration Students starting in September of 2025 must complete all requirements by August 15, 2028 Part-time students: 5 years from initial registration Students starting in September of 2025 must complete all requirements by August 15, 2030

MSW Qualifying Year For students with an undergraduate degree other than a BSW A two-term 30 credit sequence of in-class courses and a field internship designed to prepare students for the MSW (Non- Thesis) program. The MSWQY is not equivalent to a BSW, no certificate or degree. MSWQY students must complete a new application to the MSW (Non-Thesis) program. Documents submitted for the MSWQY application can be used again the MSW application. A place in the MSW program is reserved for MSWQY students in good standing (B+ average)
