WELCOME TO THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR For MUSIC APPRECIATION
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME IN CLASS? TO HAVE FUN WHILE YOU LEARN ABOUT ELEMENTS OF MUSIC. DON T BE A GRUMP! MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND PARTICIPATE IN CLASS ACTIVITIES. WE NEED YOUR VOICE! UNDERSTAND PRACTICING THE STANDARD IS ESSENTIAL TO YOUR SUCCESS. SHOW RESPECT FOR ALL PEOPLE, INSTRUMENTS AND MATERIALS IN THE CLASSROOM.
EXPECTATIONS CONTINUED - THERE IS NO NEED TO BE MEAN TO OTHERS. INTERRUPTIONS AND RUDENESS ARE NOT TOLERATED. COME TO CLASS ON TIME, READY TO LEARN AND WITH ALL NECESSARY MATERIALS.
SUPPLY LIST YOU WILL NEED THESE SUPPLIES EACH CLASS! BLACK INK PEN AND PENCIL (EVERY CLASS) BINDER OR FOLDER WITH NOTEBOOK PAPER YOU DO NOT NEED A SEPARATE NOTEBOOK OR FOLDER FOR MY CLASS. YOU MAY COMBINE MY SUBJECT WITH OTHER SUBJECTS. A PAIR OF INEXPENSIVE HEADPHONES OR EARBUDS TO BE USED WITH YOUR LAPTOP OR PHONE.
THE SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION: Music appreciation students will cover the elements of music, singing, terminology and appreciation. These concepts include but are not limited to the following concepts. Elements of Singing Music theory Performing techniques for solo and group performances Performance etiquette for class. Performance etiquette for concerts and performances Music history Music of other cultures and their expectations Movement and dance
ABSENCES All attendance policies set forth by the Richmond County Board of Education will be observed. You may check Canvas when you are out for your missed assignments, but please see me as soon as you return to class to see what additional information you missed while you were absent.
GRADING MINOR GRADES Examples of minor grades include daily performance based classroom practice checks for mastery of the standards, quizzes and other graded assignments. 60%
MAJOR GRADES Major grades in the form of pass-offs, unit tests, performance based projects will be given to access understanding of the standards. A pass- off grade will often be in the form of teacher observation or student presentation and not a written assignment. This is a performance based class therefore many times when you will be asked to demonstrate your mastery of a standard. A rubric will be provided to explain how you will be graded. 40%
FINAL EXAM 20% Yes, we have a final exam in Music Appreciation. The final exam traditionally is a culminating project to show mastery of the standards covered for the semester. This is usually in the form of a performance based project but not necessairly. A rubric will be given to explain what elements the student will be graded on.
OBSERVATION RUBRIC SAMPLE ASSIGNMENT STANDARD: Student will demonstrate proper posture during vocal warm-ups and/or singing of a song to produce a clear and free tone. This will allow the body and breath to work together to create accurate intonation. This includes posture sitting and standing. Grading Rubric 5 points techniques and assigned performance tasks during each observed class period. The student consistently develops and demonstrates good posture for warm up 4 points and assigned performance tasks most of the time during each observed class period. The student develops and demonstrates good posture for warm up techniques 3 points and assigned performance tasks some of the time during each observed class period. The student develops and demonstrates good posture for warm up techniques 2 points techniques and assigned performance tasks during the observed class period. The student rarely develops and demonstrates good posture for warm up 0 points or performance task during the observed class period. Student would not attempt to apply any form of good posture during warm-up
BEHAVIOR MEETING THE STANDARDS IN A PERFORMANCE BASED CLASS IS DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL CLASSES. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE SYLLABUS, MANY TIMES YOU ARE GRADED BY DEMONSTRATING YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE STANDARDS. IF YOU CHOOSE BEHAVIOR THAT PREVENTS YOU FROM SHOWING MASTERY OF THE STANDARDS YOU WILL RECEIVE A CHANGE OF BEHAVIOR REQUEST FORM AS DOCUMENTATION. CONSEQUENCES WILL BE ALIGNED WITH THE RICHMOND COUNTY STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT.
