  1. Outline KIER Rationale and Purpose KIER Scope National Energy target Energy Supply and Demand 2021 Government s commitment toward achieving its ambitious target Completed, On-going and planned RE projects Conclusion

  2. KIER RATIONALE AND PURPOSE Kiribati s dependence on oil imports place a burden on local government To address these challenges, the Government of Kiribati has cooperated with IRENA, SPC and the PPA to develop the Kiribati Integrated Energy Roadmap (KIER) The KIER is comprised of a policy framework with specific targets and a prioritized action plan including cost estimates and timelines The KIER covers institutional, policy, regulatory, technical, financial and capacity building actions to create an energy sector that contributes to energy independence and sustainable development The KIER also demonstrates Kiribati s commitment to developing renewable energy and addressing the challenges of climate change contributing to the Kiribati Nationally Determined Contribution to the UNFCCC COP

  3. KIER SCOPE Renewable Energy for power generation Renewable energy for transport: road and sea Renewable energy for desalination Energy efficiency in electricity supply side management (EE- SSM) Energy efficiency in electricity demand side management (EE- DSM) Energy efficiency and conservation in transport: road and sea Supply of petroleum products Cleaner cooking fuels and efficient cooking technologies

  4. National Energy Targets Target was set during the RRA study and declared by GoK during the 44th Pacific Forum Leaders meeting in Majuro 2013

  5. Energy Supply and Demand, 2021 Energy use by end-use sector Energy Supply Electricity solar generation 1% Electricity diesel generation 5% Solar annual installation 0% Road Transport 18% Fishing 7% Air Transport 3% Residential 52% Biomass 45% Petroleum 49% Sea Transport 14% Government and Industrial 2% Community & Social Services 2% Commercial Sectors 2%

Renewable Energy completed projects South Tarawa Renewable PUB PV-grid project 500 kW World Bank Project (AUSAID and GEF) 400 kW Masdar Project (UAE) 400 kW Pacific Environment Community Fund (Japan) Solar Off-grid systems South Tarawa Minister s residence solar power systems 30 kWp in total Moroni High School solar system 138 kWp

  7. RE Completed project - Cont RE Off-grid systems in the outer islands PV hybrid mini grid for boarding schools PV solar off-grid for fish centres Stand alone systems for council offices PV solar mini grid for rural church communities Solar off grid power and RO desalination plant for potable water supply in the rural areas Solar electrification project for the Christian Community Leaders Solar Home and Community Systems etc.

  8. On-going RE projects 1. Kiribati Italy Renewable Energy Program PV off-grid system for Boarding School and Village Community phase I Sustainable Water Supply for Vulnerable Communities Outstanding activity - water supply system at outer island boarding school Canada Fund for Local Initiatives For rural church communities South Tarawa Renewable Energy Project (STREP) South Tarawa Water Supply Project (STWSP) Solar Home Systems (150Wp) currently donated by China Solar Head of State (SHOS) Promoting Outer Island through the Integrated Energy Roadmap (POIDIER) ON HOLD 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

  9. Pipeline RE projects South Tarawa Renewable Energy Project (STREP) phase II Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Electric Vehicle for government ministries

  10. Conclusion For Sustainable Renewable Energy Transition Master Plan for Sustainable Transport Energy Efficient engines and electric vehicles promotion could decrease the growing demand for gasoline Biofuel development from coconut oil could be an alternative fuel for transport Changing the mindset of people to adapt to new practices.
