In this chapter, changes to the treatment guidelines for uncomplicated urinary tract infections are outlined. Ciprofloxacin has been removed due to safety concerns, while Nitrofurantoin has been retained and Fosfomycin and Gentamicin have been added as alternatives. Urinary tract infections (uncomplicated) DESCRIPTION Infection of the urinary tract CHANGES Ciprofloxacin, oral DELETED Nitrofurantoin, oral RETAINED ADDED: Fosfomycin, oral and gentamicin, IM (gentamicin - doctor prescribed, but not in pregnancy/renal impairment) REASON Ciprofloxacin, oral safety concerns restricted use in non-serious infections & thus, therapeutic alternatives considered.
