National Honor Society Application Process
What is the National Honor Society? NHS is an organization for well-rounded, academic high school student leaders who demonstrate integrity and commitment to the betterment of their community and school. The four cornerstones of the organization are Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Membership is a responsibility as well as an honor; it is a privilege, not a right.
What makes NHS membership a responsibility ? NHS requires community service to continue each year of membership! For this year only, the following must be completed by June 1st to remain a member of NHS once selected: 14 hours of community service Inductees from 1/2020 A prorated 7 hours of community service for all new members 2021.
What are the necessary qualifications for induction? 90.0 weighted, non-rounded, overall GPA Membership in at least 2 School- sponsored extra-curricular activities per year for grades 10, 11, and 12 Upstanding character Continuous and verifiable evidence of service and leadership during high school
What are the steps toward induction? 1. Notification to candidates who meet the scholarship requirement. 2. Accurate and thorough completion of Service and Leadership Application, including verification for service and activities. 3. Passing the Faculty Council s close examination of Service and Leadership Application in conjunction with discipline records and faculty surveys, on which staff members evaluate candidates in the areas of academics, leadership, and character.
How do I know the Process is Fair and Equitable? The process is completely anonymous. Resumes are coded by randomly assigned documentation numbers that you will receive via email upon completion of viewing this instructional video. Summaries of faculty surveys are also coded for anonymity. The Faculty Council will not know who the application belongs to. National policy forbids the principal and the NHS Advisor(s) from having a vote in the process. They are only the facilitators.
Due to the current state and school regulations, the NHS Application process will be done completely online. This will ensure that our process continues to be fair and equitable for all applicants. As our application process looks different this year, it is extremely important to pay close attention to this presentation, to ensure that you not only understand the process, but complete it accurately. You can reach out to Ms. Scardino-Welch or Ms. Bacher at any point during the process, should any questions arise. All Virtual Incomplete and late applications will not be considered. Please make sure to adhere to all deadlines to ensure that your application will be considered by the Faculty Council. All links, files, and materials mentioned in this presentation can be found on the WTPS NHS page (www.wtps.org/Page/6053) or our official NHS website (www.washingtontwpnhs.com/). www.wtps.org/Page/6053 www.washingtontwpnhs.com
NHS Identification Number After you have watched this presentation in its entirety, you will be receiving an e-mail from jlevan@students.wtps.org containing your identification number. It will be an automated message, so please do not reply to the email directly. Your application will be completely anonymous, and the Faculty Council reviewing your application will not see your name. This number is necessary for us to know who you are, so please make sure you receive one and include it on your application. If you do not receive an identification number within a few days after viewing this presentation, PLEASE contact Ms. Scardino- Welch or Ms. Bacher, so we can ensure you receive a number.
Application The application will be completed in a Microsoft Form titled Washington Township High School Chapter National Honor Society Student Application It is important to note that you cannot save and come back to Microsoft Form responses. You should, therefore, type your answers out in the Word document titled ApplicationTemplate.docx then copy and paste your responses into the Microsoft Form. Remember, you MUST follow the format provided in the template for your application to be considered by the Faculty Council.
Resume Co/Extra Curricular PART I CO-CURRICULAR/EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Complete the table below as accurately and fully as possible. Include all school-sponsored activities as well as outside of school activities (travel or rec teams, clubs, etc.) in which you are currently participating or have participated in during your high school years. These activities may include sports, music activities, plays, language clubs, etc. Indicate any leadership position you held, if any, for each listed activity. Any activities, service, and/or fundraisers you participated in for the co-curricular activity should be included under activities participated in . Any awards or championships won by the organization as a group should be included under group accomplishments. Do not include in the space below any of the following: church activities, community organizations such as scouting or any individual awards or recognition that you received while participating in these activities. The entry below is an example of a typical activity that might be included. Please do not include the example when you copy and paste your responses into the Microsoft Form!
The first part of the application will ask for any extra-curriculars you participated in your high school career (max of 10). These do not have to be through the high school. You should indicate any leadership position you held and accomplishments of the group. If you performed service with the extra-curricular group, please include it "activities participated in" and label it (volunteer service) - see example. If an extra-curricular activity from the SCHOOL please make sure the email of the advisor is their wtps.org email address! Please make sure names and email addresses are correct! This will cause a problem if they do not match the emails received to verify the service. This can disqualify your application from consideration. Extra- Curriculars - Review
Resume Community Service PART II VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES In the table below, list all volunteer community service-based activities (OUTSIDE OF YOUR CO- CURRICULAR/EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES) in which you are currently participating or have participated in during your high school years. These activities may include, for example, church organizations, volunteer groups, charity runs/walks, or any community service outside of your co-curricular/extra-curricular activity. Diversity and consistency in service to the community at large is being evaluated in this section of the resume. If you held a leadership position in the organization, please indicate it. You should also list in this section any service(s) you have rendered as part of a community or church organization and identify in the designated column any specific significant accomplishment(s) attained through each service activity, as applicable. Please also indicate how many hours of service or commitment your community activity details, if the activity is an ongoing service or one-time event, and which years in high school you participated in these events. Please include any letters of recommendation, accommodations, or other documentation of service with the resume. Do not include your paid job here, even if it is of a nature that involves service to others (i.e. childcare, working at a church office, employment by the school). Your entries should follow the format of the example provided on the first line of the table below. Please do not include the example when you copy and paste your responses into the Microsoft Form!
The second part of the application will ask for any community service events you participated in your high-school career (max of 10). Like the E.C.s, these do not have to be through the high school. Do not include paid work here, even if it is service to others. Again, you should follow the template to see exactly what information we need and how to format it. BE DETAILED & CLEAR on the number of hours of service and types of service performed! Ambiguity will disqualify the service from your application. Please make sure names and email addresses are correct! This will cause a problem if they do not match the emails received to verify the service. This can disqualify your application from consideration. Community Service - Review
Resume Work Experience PART IV WORK EXPERIENCE In the table below, list all employment positions, if any, you have held during your high school years. These may include summer jobs, as well as regular part-time jobs. If included in this section, it will be assumed that you were paid for any service rendered. Be sure to include any jobs you held previously, but no longer hold. Also, give an estimate of the number of hours you work (or worked) at each job. A sample entry is given below. Please note that paid employment is not one of the criteria for NHS; however, in some cases, a paid position may indicate leadership qualities or demonstrate other qualities indicative of strong character. Please do not include the example when you copy and paste your responses into the Microsoft Form!
The third section of the application will ask for any work experience you have had during your high school career (max of 3). This is work where you were paid. Paid employment is NOT a requirement for admission into NHS; however, it can help some students to show leadership or character. If you have no work experience, please leave this blank. Work Experience - Review
Resume Awards & Recognition PART V AWARDS AND RECOGNITION In the table below, list any awards or special recognition(s) you have received during your years in high school. These awards may have been as a result of your work in school or a church or community-sponsored organization. You should include Student of the Month honors (month and year(s)) but do not need to include Principal s List or Honor Roll. Please include a concise but detailed explanation of why you received the award(s) as well. Follow the sample entry on the first line below as a guide. Please do not include the example when you copy and paste your responses into the Microsoft Form!
The fourth part of the application will ask for any awards or special recognition(s) you have received in your high school career (max 5). You should include Student of the Month honors but not Principal s List or Honor Roll! These awards do not have to have been issued by the high school. You will be asked to provide a concise explanation of why you received the award. Awards and Recognition - Review
The fifth and final part of the application is the personal essay! There will be a spot to upload a Word document in the form. This must be Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double-spaced and MUST NOT exceed 2 pages You should include any information not mentioned in the previous sections that you think is important for the Faculty Council to consider. Don t repeat information already listed, but you can elaborate on an activity mentioned if you think it is necessary, especially details about the consistency of volunteer service. Personal Essay
You can talk about any special circumstances or life events that may have affected you personally OR affected your ability to participate in certain activities. If you choose to discuss these special circumstances and difficulties, you also need to address how you persevered, overcame, or dealt with these circumstances and events. This application process is anonymous, so it is vital that you do not mention your name or other identifying features in this essay. THE NAME OF THIS ESSAY MUST BE YOUR NHS IDENTIFICATION NUMBER! Personal Essay Continued

We HIGHLY recommend you complete the application as soon as possible DO NOT wait until the deadline to submit the online form. Upload your personal essay in the final part of the Microsoft form and make sure this essay is saved as [YourNHSIDNumber].docx EXAMPLE = 167.docx Submit the application by December 18, 2020! Once the Microsoft Form closes, your application WILL NOT be considered by the Faculty Council. DO NOT wait until the closing date, submit the application well BEFORE the form closes on 12/18. Quick Summary Application
Activity Verification Due to restrictions on times and amount of people in the building, we must collect activity verification via email this year. This means no signatures. We must receive verification of your extra-curriculars, community service events, and employment through email from a verified email account. For school activities the email MUST be the wtps.org email address of the head advisor/coach. Verification emails from outside of the Washington Township School District will also be authenticated. If there is any doubt on the authenticity of the email, your application will be disqualified. This process will also be through Microsoft Forms.
Activity Verification You will send an email to the advisor for each one of your activities that includes the link to the correct Microsoft Form. The advisor will fill out this form not you! Please refer to the list of coaches and advisors on our website for the person who you should contact. Although we know you may have been advised or coached within the district by an assistant coach or co-advisor, the only person and email address that will be accepted for verification is the advisor/coach of record on the list. As a result, you should ONLY email the ONE person on the list for the activity. They will reach out to assistant coaches and advisors for verification as needed. There is an email template at the bottom of ApplicationTemplate.docx that you must use to send these emails, so the instructions are clear for each advisor/coach. There is a lot of information that you must include in the email. DO NOT deviate from the email template! This will cause issues with linking the verification to your application which will disqualify the activity from consideration by the faculty council. If you have the same advisor for multiple activities, you MUST have the advisor fill out a form for EACH activity!
Verification Details The verification forms are split up into several different groups. There are separate forms for advisors inside the WTPS district and those who are outside of the district. It is of the utmost importance that you do not confuse the two groups! This will cause a disqualification of the activity from your application. The forms are also separated by your grade level and last name Juniors A-L, Juniors M-Z, Seniors A-L, Seniors M-Z Make sure you are sending the correct form (that you belong in alphabetically) to the correct advisor. Example: Jane Doe (11th grade) needs to send an email to ABC Church. She would send the email link for a Junior A-L for an advisor outside of the WTPS district. Example 2: John Smith (12th grade) needs to send an email to the Interact Advisor. He would send the email link for a Senior M-Z for an advisor within the WTPS district (to their wtps.org email address).
Activity Verification Below is the email you should send to each advisor for verification! Do not deviate from the email below other than to add their name "Hi Ms. Doe," inserting activity information that is copied and pasted from your application, inserting the correct link (see prior slide), and signing your name "Sincerely, John Smith". Hi Mr./Ms./Mrs. [Advisor Name], This year the WTHS NHS Application is in an all-virtual format, with activity verification happening via Microsoft Forms. Activity Verification will occur through Microsoft Forms this year. If there is any doubt on the authenticity of any email, your entire application will be disqualified. The advisor fills out the Microsoft Form, not you. Use the email template and do not deviate from it. By using the template, the correct information will be linked to your application. Make sure to send the correct Microsoft Form link for verification. They are separated by grade, last name, and advisor location (within/outside district). See previous slides for details and examples. This MUST be done correctly so please follow the directions fully! Quick Summary Verification
