  4. Disability Impairment and Barrier(s) = Disability An impairment is a loss of function of any part of the body. (eyes, ears, mind, legs, hands, spinal etc) A Barrier is any visible or invisible obstacle that denies a person with disability opportunity to freely utilize their environment or access a service.   5. Disability categories and how to identify them Disability How to identify it Depression, anxiety disorders, and elevated stress levels are the most common, sometimes leading to suicide attempts. They have difficulty remembering things. They also have difficulties with self care Dwarfism is the medical name for people of short stature also known as little people. Dwarfism is defined as being less than 147 centimeters tall due to some kind of medical condition (Aki and Paw Paw, Sarah Short the musician Persons lacking pigmentation Mental disability including psychiatric disability and learning disability Little people / people of short stature Persons with Albinism Albinism has several challenges and among them is low vision, sun damage potentially resulting in skin cancer, and widespread discrimination due to ignorance. They use sunscreen lotion to reduce damage caused by the sun. They wear long sleeved dressing and put on huts to reduce problems associated with the sun. Use the Magnifier lens for reading. But normalize when put on anti-seizure medication (ASM) treatment, mostly monotherapy with phenobarbital, phenytoin or carbamazepine. Locals are also trying to treat them using herbal medicines. If they abandon treatment they experience seizures. Have more than one disability e.g. Physical disability and deafness. Have a combination of hearing impairment and sight impairment. One could be stronger than the other or one could be totally Blind and Deaf. Use tactile to communicate This is the commonest and easiest to see because it affects either hands or the legs. It includes those with hunchbacks, club feet, etc .   7. Disability categories and how to identify them Disability Celebral Palsy How to identify it Is a developmental disorder and a leading cause of disability mostly in young children. It is a group of neurological disorders that show up in infancy or adulthood and permanently affect muscle movements and posture , leaving one having a disability for life. It is a result of brain injury sustained during foetal development or birth. Seen from: challenges in co-ordination and movement , speech challenges they speak like drunkards because of a heavy tongue. They also walk like drunkards while staggering. They may have challenges controlling the flow of saliva. Spinal Bifida is a birth defect where a developing baby s spinal cord fails to develop properly. It occurs when the spinal cord doesn t close properly while in the womb Spinal Bifida and Hydrocephalus Hydrocephalus: is the accumulation of fluid in the brain s cavities. The excess fluid puts pressure on the brain and cause brain damage. Seen from the big heads - Seen from inability to respond to greetings, instructions, some use sign language. Hearing disability including deafness and hard of hearing disability For the hard of hearing- if you close your mouth they cease to get all your communications Totally Blind use a white cane to move, they may also be guided around by a helper. Some put on dark glasses Use braille to read. They also respond to audio messages Some have closed eyes while others open the eyes without sight Low vision: can read at close range and also move independently Those with low vision can read large print. Visual disability including blindness and low vision disability. The skills to do these ranges from skilled to severely challenged. Some require significant support in their daily lives while others may need less support to live independently. It is a life long disorder but the degree of impairment varies and therefore functionality among the different individuals with autism also differs. Disability categories and how to identify them Disability Autism How to identify it It is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive behaviour, mood alterations, impaired interactions and difficulties in communication. Autistic children have delayed speech, find trouble expressing their needs and emotions, they tend to stay alone, do things alone and cannot look people in the eye. They also have rotative behaviour, follow routines, do things repetitively and love semblance of most of the things and any change agitates them. Some are hyperactive, unable to sit still, some even may present with epilepsy and learning problems Intellectual disability (or ID) is a term used when a person has certain limitations in cognitive functioning and skills, including conceptual, social and practical skills, such as language, social and self-care skills. Disability categories and how to identify them Disability Intellectual Disability How to identify it These limitations can cause a person to develop and learn more slowly or differently than a typically developing person. Intellectual disability can happen any time before a person turns 22 years old, even before birth. Intellectual disability is the most common developmental disability. There are significant limitations in adaptive behavior in one or more of the following areas: conceptual, social or practical skills (skills that are needed to live, work, and play in the community).
