THE GAINS AND CAUTION IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA FOR CHRISTIANS IN THIS 21STCENTURY- 1 JOHN 2:15-17 COCIN GOLD & BASE, JOS SUNDAY SERMON OF 6THOCTOBER, 2024
OPENING 2 Definition Usage Goal Is it good for a Christian? Am I not too old to use it? What is there in social media?
THE GAINS 3 It is a powerful weapon to spread information about our mission. You can control what you watch, read or listen to with digital streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Apple Music, etc. It is a permanent place to keep information. It is a big market to sell goods, products and services. Amazon, Konga, Jiji, etc. The information on social media is mind-blowing. At virtually no cost, you can reach a limitless number of audience.
THE GAINS 4 It is virtually borderless. Several shares will make a post go viral to all parts of the world or a search will reveal a post you have uploaded on social media. You earn money by posting on some social media platforms such as X, TikTok, etc. You can work on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Zoom, WhatsApp, etc. You can advertise yourself and what you do on social media such as on LinkedIn. There is always somebody interested in what you have to offer which you can boast by using the harsh tag.
THE GAINS 5 It is a platform to counter misinformation and to post the truth. Monies can be saved there e.g. crypto-currency With translators and transcribers, a person who cannot write can record his message in one of the major Nigerian languages or the official language which will be transcribed and he or she can then translate it into English, French, any major language or any of the world languages.
THE CAUTION IN THE GAINS 6 It promotes self . Isaiah 26:12B all that we have accomplished you have done for us. Don t believe all you see there and be pressured to be what you see. 1 John 2:15- For everything in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life comes not from the Father but from the world. It creates artificial friendship and prevents socialization or in-person contact which is important. Your crying infant needs your voice and not music on a phone. Matthew 25:31- 45
CAUTION IN THE GAINS 7 Sexual predators and traffickers use it, sexting, sextortion, online dating, things that promote lust, etc. take place there- Job 31:1; Matthew 5:28 It promotes misinformation with the effect that anybody who shares fake news may be civilly liable in defamation or criminally liable under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2021 of the Penal Code Law of Plateau State for cyberstalking, cyberbullying, etc. Proving them in Court is very easy. Leviticus 19:16 Do not go about spreading slander among your people. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor s life. I am the LORD.
THE CAUTION IN THE GAINS 8 Most internet crimes are easy to proof or establish because of the digital footprint. Buying second-hand devices such computers or phones has led many Christians to be guilty of the crime of receiving stolen property whose punishment is greater than the stealing itself. Tracing stolen computers or phones is easy as all that is needed is the IMEI. A lot of us don t safely keep our IMEI to enable us track our stolen devices.
THE CAUTION IN THE GAINS 9 You should be careful what post you like, marking where you are or where you visit or have visited and who or what product you follow because criminals are online watching your activities. Carelessly reveal unnecessary or negative information about yourself. Most employers look at your social media handles to know if they should offer you a job. It can be very addictive.
