Safety Briefing PRNFC Safety Actions: Status Update 2
Standardization Board Safe operation of club aircraft depends on pilot standardization procedures, training, and check methods BUPERSINST 1710.22 Composed of Ops O, Safety O, Manager, all CFI & FCA Meets quarterly- last meeting was August 2nd Forum where club leadership and CFIs can share lessons learned and agree on best practices. 3
Instructor Demos Instructors shall demonstrate each introduced in-flight maneuver before allowing a student to perform it for the first time PRNFC Flying Regulations, added Should also demo any previously introduced maneuver that stud has not recently performed Studs should exhibit a clear understanding of procedures for planned maneuvers during the brief If uncomfortable with a maneuver in-flight, request further instruction or even a re-demo 4
Two-Challenge Rule Standard practice in response to any observed deviation from the intended path of flight Challenge 1- Deviation observed, pilot not flying announces it and expects corrective action (example: We are getting slow ) Challenge 2- No corrective action observed, pilot not flying directs a specific corrective input (example: Add power now ) If none or insufficient corrective action taken, pilot not flying should assume flight controls, verbally announce I have the controls , and apply corrective inputs 5
Effective Communications Instructions to the pilot flying should be clear, concise, and correct (3C) while still conveying the intended effect Instructors should consider experience level when providing directions Complex instruction is best done during the brief or debrief, keep it simple in flight Brief the flight, fly the brief: keep surprises to minimum in order to enhance communication 6
Cockpit Lighting FAA minimum required cockpit lighting standards may not be sufficient to enable pilot to clearly and quickly interpret instruments (legal vs safe) Night flights in club aircraft fall into this category A hands free light that is sufficient to illuminate the instrument panel will be carried on all night flights PRNFC Flying Regulations, added This can be a head lamp, ballcap style lighted visor, etc. 7
Spatial Disorientation All flying club pilots shall receive annual training on the debilitating effects of spatial D Already complete for CFIs (AOPA) Expect training at the September PRNFC member meeting 8
Conclusion Stan Board implementing recommendations from SIR and NAS Pax Our pilots and instructors will utilize new guidance to enhance safety Currency requirements reviewed The sky awaits 9
