  1. NOAA APHEX 2021 Plans HFP Director, Jason Dunion1 HFP Deputy Director, Jonathan Zawislak1 1 University of Miami/CIMAS - NOAA/AOML/HRD April 26, 2021

  2. 2021 NOAA HFP and Aircraft Assets Agency Collaborations ONR TCRI: 1 July 30 Sep NASA CPEX-AW: 1 July 15 Aug* o Science objectives: convective processes, marine BL, ITCZ, AEWs, SAL, ADM-Aeolus validation o Possible deployment sites: St. Croix or Cabo Verde o*Due to COVID complications, NASA is now considering 3 options for its campaign 1 July-15 Aug 2021, 15 Aug-30 Sep 2021, or delaying to summer 2022 NOAA Aircraft Research Hours P-3s (N42 and N43) o 140 hr total o 32 hr (4 missions) dedicated to TC rapid intensification o N42 will be the primary HRD-TCRI P-3 this summer G-IV (N49) o 111 hr total o No TCRI-dedicated flight hours, but we could have TCRI flights of opportunity o Possible deployment to Cape Verde 2

  3. 2021 NOAA Aircraft Deployment Locations Aircraft Deployment Sites Several CONUS locations (Gulf Coast and U.S. East Coast) St. Croix, Barbados, Aruba, Bermuda Cabo Verde: G-IV-only (details TBD) Liberia, Costa Rica: not an option for 2021 G-IV Range Rings (2-hr On-Station) P-3 Range Rings (2-hr On-Station) 3

  4. 2021 NOAA Aircraft Expendables & Instrumentation Expendables Dropsondes o HRD: 224 (+16 IR/SST sondes) o TCRI: 356 (325 new sondes + 31 carried over from 2020) AXBTs (P-3s) o NRL AXBTs: 96 in storage at NOAA AOC (performance should be much better than HRD AXBTs) o External CAD launches (~19 per mission) possible in 2021, but still TBD (AOC safety protocols) o Internal AXBT chute still an option- may be limited on the number per mission (AOC safety protocols) Aircraft Instrumentation Tail Doppler Radar (TDR): N42, N43, N49 >> reflectivity, 3-D winds (~0-15 km) Compact rotational Raman Lidar (CRL): N42 >> T, moisture, aerosols (flight level to surface) Wide Swath Radar Altimeter (WSRA): N42 >> significant wave height and directional wave spectra Terrestrial High-energy Observations of Radiation (THOR) >> gamma ray emissions associated with lightning Flight-Level Data: N42, N43, N49 >> PTH, winds 4

  5. 2021 NOAA APHEX Daily Schedule and Mission Execution HRD Weather Discussions o Mon-Fri 1630-1700 UTC (beginning in early July) o Consider putting together a tag-team of TCRI volunteers to lead a week of discussions? P-3 and G-IV Crewing o COVID restrictions will limit HRD/CIMAS crewing to 1-2 per flight o Unlikely that TCRI team members will be able to join aircraft crews this summer (ground support) NASA s Mission Tools Suite o Used to monitor NOAA missions, display planned flights tracks, track satellite overpasses, etc. o A TCRI account has been created and a training is planned for June (date & time TBD) Mission Communications o Google Meet Link for all APHEX missions Improve communications between ground-based support, onboard crew, and the TCRI science team A limited number of TCRI members are welcome to join those GMs o Real-Time Google doc flight logs will be created during missions to capture details of the flight Relevant weather, interesting aircraft obs (TDR plots, skew-Ts), flight track changes, etc. HRD would welcome TCRI participation 5
