Preparing for the EOG: A Team Effort! Parent/School Teacher Student
Parents play a key role in preparing students for state assessments. During this testing period, parents are encouraged to: Make sure students are in school during review and testing sessions. Avoid doctor or dental appointments on review or test dates Encourage students to listen carefully to all test-taking directions given by the teacher and to ask questions about any directions that are unclear . Make sure students are well-rested on test day. Make sure students eat breakfast on the day of the test. Hunger can detract from a good test performance Encourage students to do their best. Take practice tests. EOG practice tests are available online. Go to http://dpi.state.nc.us/accountability/testing/releasedforms Request that your child go to bed early the night before EOG tests begin. Prepare a good breakfast for children on test day and arrive at school on time. Breakfast will be provided for all students who need to eat when they arrive at school. Remind your child to answer all test questions and not leave any blank, even if they unsure about the answer.
Common Questions Q: What is the test format? All tests are multiple choice. Reading Preparation in the Classroom Read the title; predict what you think the passage is about. Underline key words in each question as you read them. Number the paragraphs. Now read the passage. Enclose key words in circles. Re-read the questions; mark out the answers you know are wrong. Select the best answer.
QUAN Q Read the whole Question. UUnderline important words or phrases. AAnswer the question. NNote your evidence from the text to prove your answers.
Reading Preparation in the Classroom, cont d. - In class, teachers teach RUNNERS and QUAN techniques for developing test-taking stamina and skills. - -Teachers incorporate higher-level thinking questions in guided reading and mini-lessons. These are the same type of questions found on the EOG. - Flex Reading groups focus on reading strategies to foster thoughtful discussion about books. - This is used in conjunction with independent reading, which encourages stamina (reading for an extended period of time). - -Benchmark testing gives students a preview of testing in EOG format.
Reading Preparation at Home - Continue to monitor your student s independent reading log at home. Stamina is something he or she will definitely need to have developed by May. Ask thoughtful questions to your student as he or she reads to promote higher-level thinking and understanding of the text. - Review EOG vocabulary (will be sent home with your child). - Review Multiple Choice Test Taking Strategies with your child (will be included in the packet to be sent home).
Math Preparation in the Classroom Students are exposed to math vocabulary in the classroom. - - Teachers use EOG practice problems in small group setting during math. Language on assessments is similar to EOG language. - - Teachers encourage students to circle and write the key words in word problems done in class. - Calculator practice.
Math Preparation at Home Work with your student to check over his/her homework. Distracter answer choices will most likely be included in the EOG. - - Encourage showing work with homework. This can be a diagram, picture, place value sketch, numerical algorithm, etc. - Have a student check over his/her work with a calculator to increase confidence with the calculator.
