BACKGROUND When? Around the summer of AD 67 Latter days of the cruel regime of Emperor Nero (ended AD 68) Where? City of Rome Mamertine Dungeon Why? Paul s Death was Imminent (4:6) Final Instructions to Timothy: So he could continue the work To prepare him for the persecution ahead To encourage him to stand firm for God To motivate him to use the gifts that God had given him
THE CONTRAST IN THE TWO LETTERS Resigned to the Future The time of my departure is at hand (4:6) I have finished my course (4:7) Rejection by his Friends First Timothy: Some have turned aside (1:6) Some have made shipwreck (1:19) Some have turned after Satan (5:15) Second Timothy: All those in Asia have turned away from me (1:15) All forsook me (4:16)
THE CHARACTERS INVOLVED (II Timothy 1:1-6) PAUL His Love for Timothy Timothy, a beloved son (v 2) His Calling as an Apostle ( sent one ) an apostle of Jesus Christ (v 1) appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles (v 11) His Commitment to God I thank God, whom I serve (v 3) His Pure Conscience whom I serve with a pure conscience (v 3) His Endurance in Prayer without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day (v 3)
THE CHARACTERS INVOLVED (II Timothy 1:1-6) TIMOTHY His Tears Being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy (v 4) Tears have a key part to play in the life of a believer His Faith I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you (v 5) His Spiritual Gift The gift of God which is in you (v 6)
THE COMMANDS TO TIMOTHY (II Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14) Be Filled Stir up the gift of God which is in you (v 6) Keep ablaze Only possible if filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) Be Fearless Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner (v 8) Be Faithful Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard of me in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus (v 13) That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in you (v 14)
THE CALLING OF GOD (II Timothy 1:9-10) We were Chosen: in Christ Jesus before time began (v 9) We were Called: called with a holy calling (v 9) to SALVATION and SERVICE We were Saved: who has saved us (v 9) It was All by Grace (ie unmerited favour): not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace (v 9) It was Through the Lord Jesus Christ: which was given to us in Christ Jesus (v 9) has now been revealed to us by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ (v 10) We have Eternal Life: who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (v 10)
THE CONFIDENCE OF PAUL (II Timothy 1:11-12) I Know whom I have believed ( v 12) I Have Believed I have believed (v 12) Without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) I am Persuaded that He is able to keep (v 12) - Now unto Him who is able to keep and to present you faultless (Jude 24) I have Committed to Him, until that day (v 12) Commit the keeping of your souls to Him (I Peter 4:19) I was Appointed a preacher, and an apostle and a teacher (v 11)
THE COMFORT OF ONESIPHORUS (II Timothy 1:15-18) He Refreshed Paul He often refreshed me (v 16) He Stood by Paul He was not ashamed of my chains (v 16) He was Diligent He sought me out very diligently and found me (v 17) He would be Rewarded That he may find mercy (reward) of the Lord in that day (v 18)
