Explore the research plans and needs for NSTX-U supported by the collaboration of various institutions and universities. The focus is on preparing for NSTX-U operations with projects like MSE off-line timing measurements, MSE-LIF installation, and ongoing research goals for the future. Dive into the details of diagnostics support, high-priority research goals, and the impact on different TSGs within the 5-year plan.

  2. Research plans and needs for this year (FY2014) in preparation for NSTX-U operations in FY2015 rtMSE Off-line timing and latency measurements will be completed this year. Analysis software completes in a few milliseconds. Install new computer hardware in mezzanine and integrate into existing MSE-CIF system. Integrate rtMSE into NSTX-U control system (FY2015). Duplication of data will be retained for the first year or two. XP-> Windows 7 migration Requires upgrade of LabView to v8.6 and new interface cards. We can continue to use existing National Instruments DAQ modules and chassis so long as we don t upgrade LabView to a version higher than v8.6. PCI facility clock card? 3. Research plans and needs for this year (FY2014) in preparation for NSTX-U operations in FY2015 MSE-LIF installation. Re-installation of existing (10 sightlines) and new fibers (14 sightlines) in process now. Installation of optics table for collection optics and fiber array holder is complete. Laser testing complete and ready for installation. All detectors and interference filter have been received. Assembly of detector system to be completed this year. Data acquisition system to be procured later this year. Test cell access will be needed for spatial calibration (near term) and DNB/laser system testing (end of FY2014). NSTX-U NSTX-U Collaboration Status and Plans - April / May 2014

  4. Research Plans for FY2015 beyond MSE diagnostics support research in all NSTX-U TSGs. MSE-CIF, rtMSE, and MSE-LIF will support several of the highest priority research goals highlighted in the 5 year plan, spanning several TSGs including: 100% NI sustainment (ASC). Transport at reduced * and high-beta under varying q-profiles (T&T). Understanding of non-inductive start-up and ramp-up (Start- up/Ramp-up). MSE will diagnose the current drive/q-profile evolution from new off- axis beams (Crosscutting). NSTX-U 4 NSTX-U Collaboration Status and Plans - April / May 2014

  5. Research Plans for FY2015 beyond Fast ion modes, anomalous beam diffusion/loss effects on current profile at higher fields and from new beams (Fast ions). RF current drive/sustainment efforts during ramp-up and low current H-modes at increased Bt (RF). MSE-LIF will provide a non-perturbative current profile measurement for RF experiments. The combined, fully-cross calibrated MSE systems will allow for Er measurements and better edge current density measurements, increasingly important to understand pedestal stability and transport (Boundary). rtMSE could possibly support feedback information useful for macro stability (Macro). Explore new MSE-LIF capability to measure P(R). NSTX-U 5 NSTX-U Collaboration Status and Plans - April / May 2014

  6. Highest-priority incremental measurement capability (For diagnostic solicitation grantees funded for 2012-2015) Fast Filter Switching for MSE-CIF to view different beam sources in real-time. Presently done manually, between shots. Electronic switching can be done in several milliseconds. NSTX-U 6 NSTX-U Collaboration Status and Plans - April / May 2014
