  1. NTAC:MH ENGAGEMENT GUIDE

  2. WELCOME! The NIH Technology Accelerator Challenge for Maternal Health (NTAC: Maternal Health) seeks to encourage and support new sensing and diagnostic technologies that can guide rapid clinical decision-making, improve patient outcomes, and ultimately prevent maternal morbidity and mortality. To win the NTAC: Maternal Health, participants must: 1. Submit their design for a point-of-care diagnostic test or platform technology addressing at least two of the four priority conditions (listed on Slide 13) affecting maternal health, and 2. Submit a robust description of the proposed path for translation and further development of the diagnostic technology for use in global health settings. For complete requirements and guidance, click here. 2

  3. THIS ENGAGEMENT GUIDE INCLUDES 1. Background: Why new maternal health solutions are needed 2. Challenge Details: Criteria, process, and timeline for submissions 3. Amplification Suggestions: How you can share this with your own colleagues and networks to broaden the pool of new ideas for maternal health 4. Contact: How to get in touch with our communication team 3

  4. THIS ENGAGEMENT GUIDE INCLUDES We encourage you to use this guide to... learn more about the NTAC: Maternal Health consider how your own innovative diagnostic technology may be relevant for a prize entry share information on the NTAC: Maternal Health with technologists, med tech innovators, social entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, and others in your network who may be interested in this opportunity 4

  5. BACKGROUND Why new solutions are needed to tackle the maternal health crisis in the U.S. and around the world 5

  6. MATERNAL HEALTH CRISIS IN U.S. AND GLOBALLY Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are major global health problems, resulting in the deaths of more than 800 women and 7,000 newborns each day. Unfortunately, the United States experiences the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed country. Hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, and bacterial infections account for more than 50% of global maternal mortality, with 94% of these fatalities occurring in low- and lower middle-income countries. Contributing to the high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality in low-resource settings globally is a lack of low-cost diagnostics that operate at the point-of-care. New technologies are needed that can detect and differentiate common conditions associated with pregnancy. 6

  7. RESOURCES ON THE MATERNAL HEALTH CRISIS From Global Agencies From Notable Nonprofits & Professional Associations WHO: Fact Sheet on Maternal Mortality Kaiser Family Foundation: The U.S. Government and Global Maternal and Child Health Efforts UNICEF: Maternal Mortality UNFPA: Maternal Health Commonwealth Fund: Maternal Mortality in the United States From U.S. Agencies CDC: Maternal Mortality American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Maternal Mortality Prevention NICHD: Maternal Morbidity and Mortality NIH ORWH: Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Web Portal Maternal Health Task Force: Resources on Maternal Health NIH ORWH: Roadmap to Improve Maternal Health in the U.S. Center for American Progress: Building on the ACA: Administrative Actions to Improve Maternal Health HHS: Initiative to Improve Maternal Health 7

  8. WHY WAS THIS CHALLENGE CREATED? The NTAC: Maternal Health was created to directly address the maternal mortality crisis being experienced around the world by bringing new diagnostics and devices that can contribute to safer pregnancy and birth. The NTAC: Maternal Health will incentivize the development of new prototype devices that may be able to guide rapid clinical decision-making improve patient outcomes, and help prevent maternal morbidity and mortality. 8

  9. ABOUT THE CHALLENGE SPONSORS National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) The mission of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) is to improve health by leading the development and accelerating the application of biomedical technologies. The Institute is committed to integrating engineering and physical sciences with biology and medicine to advance our understanding of disease and its prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment. NIBIB supports emerging technology research and development within its internal laboratories and through grants, collaborations, and training. Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) NICHD was founded in 1962 to investigate human development throughout the entire life process, with a focus on understanding disabilities and important events that occur during pregnancy. Since then, research conducted and funded by NICHD has helped save lives, improve wellbeing, and reduce societal costs associated with illness and disability. NICHD s mission is to lead research and training to understand human development, improve reproductive health, enhance the lives of children and adolescents, and optimize abilities for all. 9

  10. ABOUT THE CHALLENGE SPONSORS NIH Office of Research on Women s Health (ORWH) ORWH is the first Public Health Service office dedicated specifically to promoting women's health research within and beyond the NIH scientific community. ORWH crafts and implements the NIH Strategic Plan for Women's Health Research in partnership with NIH Institutes and Centers and co-funds research on the role of sex and gender on health. Additional Collaborators The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation shares a commitment to global health and is cooperating with NIBIB to consider additional support for the Challenge winners and honorable mentions. VentureWell is a platform provider under contract with NIBIB to help administer the Challenge registration and submission portal, and to support outreach and awareness of the Challenge. 10
