NTN and Automobiles at SSIG work for 3GPP Rel-19, Presentation to CITS Alexandre PETRESCU, at CEA in France With synch of Mr. Chuberre September 21st, 2023 1
Abbreviations NTN: Non-Terrestrial Networks, a term employed extensively at 3GPP to designate mostly satellite communications. NTN/TN mobility: the mobility of a terminal equipment between an NTN access and a typical TN (terrestrial network) access. SSIG: Satellite Standardisation Interest Group, en marge de 3GPP . Holds monthly telcos, presents to 3GPP. Led by Nicolas CHUBERRE nicolas.chuberre@thalesaleniaspace.com. 2
SSIG Context: The SSIG was established on January 8th, 2018 as a special interest group for standardization within the ALIX project led by Thales Alenia Space - France and sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) . Vision: global connectivity services integrating towards unification of satellite and terrestrial networks with common technology standards. A broad range of stakeholders can exchange information on satellite-related standardization activities for the integration of satellites into the evolving 3GPP ecosystem. 3
Rel-19 NTN evolution package status SSIG#65, 8th Sept 2023 4
Multiple organisations within SSIG contributed to prioritize the items grouped into: NR-NTN, IoT-NTN. NTN/TN mobility is just one item in the list of many items considered by the SSIG. 5
In addition to the SSIG ranking proposed to Rel-19, other organisations interests in NTN satcom for automobiles, on next two slides. 6
Qualcomm Views on scope for NR RAN Topology enhancements in Rel- 19 RP-231973, Sept. 2023. 5G access for UEs onboard aircrafts, cruise ships, helicopters and vehicles in remote areas with limited sky visibility Multi-hop/redundant backhauling of mobile relays for public safety and disaster recovery Backhauling via NTN, and Xn-/NG-based NTN/TN handover for backhaul. Support for onboard/on-site MEC, local services, and inter-UE communications. No need for roaming or RAN-sharing agreements between onboard/onsite access PLMNs and backhaul PLMN(s). Integrated Access Backhauling (IAB). Wireless Access and Backhauling (WAB). 7
Bosch, Fraunhofer IIS NTN Evolution for Automotive Requirements 3GPP TSG RAN Meeting #101 Bangalore, India, September 11-15, 2023, RP-232393. Introduce different UE Types, i.e., vehicle UE including defining and specifying different antenna types Baseline: mobility enhancements between TN and NTN and between NTN and TN to ensure service continuity Additionally: In correlation with 5GAA inputs. 8
NTN for Automobiles at Plenary of 3GPP Large support to consider High Power Tx User Equipment in Rel-19, e.g. for automotive and public safety applications. NTN/TN mobility won't be part of the Rel-19 since already supported in Rel-18. Not a single company was able to clearly demonstrate what enhancement is needed beyond what Rel-18 has defined. Plenary Discussions: Rel-18 still ongoing. Plenary report 3GPP TSG RAN Meeting #101 RP-232610 Bengaluru, India 11th 15th September, 2023 9
