BULGARIAN NUCLEAR ENERGY NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND WORLD ENERGY SECURITY Nuclear Power in Romania Catalin RADOI Deputy Head of Mission Embassy of Romania to the Republic of Bulgaria
Nuclear Energy in Romania Romania has two nuclear reactors generating about 20% of its electricity. Nuclear reliable energy source. energy represents a robust low-carbon Long-standing Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Units 1 and 2, build with CANDU reactors/technology. tradition and rich expertise The country's first commercial nuclear power reactor began operating in 1996. Its second started up in May 2007. Government support for nuclear energy is strong.
Romanias Nuclear Program: ongoing projects and long-term planning Romania has three main important projects in the nuclear field: 1. Refurbishment of Unit 1 reactor of Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) 2. Development of two new units of Cernavoda NPP (Units 3 & 4 to be completed by 2030-2031) 3. Deployment of the first SMRs in Europe, in cooperation with NuScale
1. Refurbishment of Unit 1 reactor of Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) To be completed by 2028 Will extend the operation of Unit 1 for another 30 years, untill 2060 In March 2023, the National Company Nuclearelectrica SA selected CANDU Energy Inc, member of SNC Lavalin Group
2. Development of two new units of Cernavoda NPP (Units 3 & 4 to be completed by 2030-2031) In Nov. 2022, RO signed with US Export-Import Bank (EXIM) two letters of intent on providing loan agreement for more that $3 billion for the completion of units 3 and 4 of Cernavoda NPP Upon the completion of this projects, RO will add, in 2031, 10TWh of zero-CO2emissions Energy System to the National
3. Small Modular Nuclear Reactors / SMRs First of this kind implemented in Europe Top priority on RO gov t agenda RO plans to build 6 NuScale modules with an overall output of 462MW, by 2028 First SMR in Romania to be built in Doicesti (Dambovita county), on the site of a decommissioned coal power plant
