  2. What is the impact of the Opioid/Fentanyl Epidemic? Epidemic - a widespread occurrence of a disease or a rapid development, spread, or growth of something, especially something harmful. 2 Level 3 - Restricted

  3. Know - Wonder - Learn What do I Know/Heard? What are my questions? What I Learned. Take 2-3 minutes and write down what you know or have heard about opioids or fentanyl. Discuss what you know with your small group and add to your list. What are some questions you have about opioids and/or fentanyl? Make a list of your questions.   5. Discussion Questions Teen drug use has gone down over the years, but overdose or poisoning deaths have gone up. Why do think this is happening? What role does social media play in the opioid/fentanyl epidemic? What are some ideas your group has for a social media message to discourage use of opioids/fentanyl? Level 3 - Restricted

  6. What are prescription Opioids? Prescription opioids are used mostly to treat moderate to severe pain. Can be dangerous because they are highly addictive. Overdoses and death are common when abused or not used under a doctor s direct supervision. Common Prescription Opioids include: Hydrocodone (Vicodin) Oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet) Codeine Fentanyl 6 Level 3 - Restricted

  7. What are reasons people take opioids? How could this lead to an opioid epidemic? People misuse prescription opioids by: Taking the medicine in a way or dose other than prescribed. Taking someone else s prescription medicine. Taking the medicine for the effect it causes - a sense of euphoria often called getting high Level 3 - Restricted

Signs of an overdose Steps to take if someone is experiencing an overdose: Call 911 Administer naloxone if you can Support breathing Stay with the person until an ambulance comes Small, constricted pinpoint pupils Falling asleep/loss of consciousness, limp body Shallow, slow breathing Pale, blue or ashen- colored skin Choking or gurgling sounds Level 3 - Restricted

  11. How to use Naloxone (Narcan) Oregon has a Good Samaritan Law that protects people when they are helping themselves or others experiencing an overdose. This means no one will be arrested for illegal drug use. Narcan and Naloxone v

  13. Summary The Opioid epidemic is happening in Oregon. Everyone can help to educate each other and help support each other through the opioid & fentanyl epidemic. v Being educated about opioids & fentanyl is something that we can do to help us and our friends make good decisions that can keep us safe.
