Week 7 Number Talk The key messages It is quite normal for children to find naming some numbers confusing when they are first learning them, but that doesn t mean they are bad at maths. 1. Children will see and hear numbers in a wide variety of situations (not just school). We can help them learn number names by pointing them out and talking about them. 2. Once you start looking for numbers, suddenly they are everywhere. 3.
Week 7 Number Talk (continued) Examples of using numbers in everyday life include Buses Phones Street/house numbers Telling the time Shopping Weighing when baking/buying fruit, veg and meat from supermarket. Calendars Changing the TV channel Speed signs on the road (unless all these examples are made explicit to children they may not benefit from this exposure)
Week 7 Number Talk (continued) Recognising the oddities in number language. Number 11 is made from a ten and a one but bears no resemblance within it s name. Same goes for number 12. Seventy includes the word seven but thirty uses thir instead of three. How we say numbers can be confusing compared to how we write them e.g. we say sixty (60) but not teen-six (16) 17 is said seven teen , the opposite way round to how it is written, with teen instead of ten . But this pattern changes once we get past the teen numbers, and for 22 we say twenty-two naming the numbers in the order that they appear. This is why numbers in English need to be learnt rather than figured out.
Week 7 Number Talk (an activity just for parents) We are going to do an activity that is designed to illustrate just how tricky the language of numbers for children. It will help you to see what it is like to be a beginner with numbers. In your Week 7 resource pack you should have a sheet titled Welsh Number Names. Look carefully at this and see if you can notice the pattern that these number names follow. For example the welsh for 20 is two-ten and 12 is one-ten-two. Not only is naming numbers confusing but the similarity in some sounds can also be tricky to grasp. It is easy to confuse the end sound teen and ty .
Week 7 Number Talk (trying it out with your P1) Activity 1 -In your Families Connect resources pack you will find Bus cards with either a ty number or a teen number. These should be shuffled together and placed face down on a surface. 1. A Ty Bus Garage and a Teen Garage (A4 sheets). 2. How to play Activity 1 Take turns to pick a card. Say the number and decide whether that bus belongs in the Ty garage or the teen garage.
Week 7 Number Talk (trying it out with your P1) Activity 2 -In your Families Connect resources pack you will find Colourful number cards 1. Number scene (busy street) 2. How to play Activity 2 Take turns to pick a number card. Say the number out loud. Find where your number is on the scene sheet. Discuss do you see similar numbers when you are out and about? Can you see any numbers in your room/around the home?
Next week Next week we will put up a new PowerPoint onto the school website with the main messages we planned to get across had our Week 8 session gone ahead. Keep an eye out for more information from Miss Sneddon via the newsletter, Twitter and our school app.
