Highlights Past & Future NWESC - Nursing Workplace Environment and Staffing Councils Task Force Councils established in 9 hospitals Capital Health Medical Center at Hopewell & Capital Health Regional Medical Center, Trenton Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital, Jefferson Stratford Hospital, Jefferson Washington Township Hospital
NWESC Pilots Council hospitals (continued) Jersey City Medical Center Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County & Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center Hospitals represented are a blend of urban, rural, union and non-union
NWESC Structure 51% bedside RNs with at least 50% of their work time spent in direct patient care CNO co-chairs the council with a direct care nurse Council participates in developing a plan for nurse staffing and creating a positive work environment and forwards the plan to the CNO for budget planning Number of staff nurses on the council is sufficient to provide adequate representation of all nursing care in the hospital. 5
Model The NWESC pilot program is based on the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments 6
NWESC Pilots Four education Sessions held for all council members in 2018 IRB approved research study began in 2017 Drs. Johansen and De Cordova will report on the work this afternoon. 2018 rollout next cohorts Thank you NWESC Task Force!
Advocacy & Policy Issues Advocacy Committee monitors pending bills, meets with legislators and prepares position statements and talking points to communicate ONL NJ support or opposition. Coordinates testimony on behalf of ONL NJ NJ Board of Nursing
Advocacy & Policy Legislative priorities ONL NJ Supports A854/S1961 Consumer Access to Health Care Act A1597/S954 Enters NJ in multistate Nurse Licensure Compact A859/S953 Requires newly licensed RNs to attain a BSN degree within 10 years of initial licensure
Advocacy & Policy Legislative priorities ONL NJ Opposes A1470/S989 Establishes minimum registered professional nurse staffing standards for hospitals and ambulatory surgery facilities and certain DHS facilities
ONL NJ PAC Continuing political action committee was established in 2015 To gain support of legislators on central issues to the future of nursing appropriate nursing resources for patient care at the bedside protection of scope of practice preparation for practice and licensure in the State
ONL NJ PAC 2016 received $6,465 in contributions 2017 received $5,335 in contributions Over 245 contributors to date ONL NJ Board of Directors 100% participation
ONL NJ PAC Contributed to three campaigns during the 2017 election cycle 1. Senator Joseph Vitale 2. Assemblyman Dan Benson 3. Mentoring Program Since its inception, more than 125 nurses from different organizations have been matched in mentor-mentee dyads. Education workshop The Mentoring Difference An Evidence Based Approach to Mentoring Top Leaders was held March 2. Cohort VI begins in June 2018
